RIP Jacqueline Pearce

Jacqueline Pearce has died, who was in her most famous role as Servalan in Blake's 7 also probably my most favourite villain in this or any other galaxy. (I may have mentioned this from time to time.)

People who have been lucky enough to meet her at cons (when she was not being a lethal yet fabulously dressed evil ruler of the galaxy) say that she was also pretty great in rl.

[personal profile] jekesta helpfully linked to a most she made about how awesome Servalan is, which has many pictures demonstrating her unique fantabulosity so there is no need for me to get any more incoherent at this point.

Also you can have some vids of her and her amazing costumes. (It's not that it's only her costumes that were amazing. It's just that you can't talk about Servalan and not talk about how Jacqueline Pearce could walk out into a BBC quarry wearing evening dresses made out of feathers/chicken wire/lizards/whatever and make the quarry look like the thing that had embarrassingly turned up in the wrong outfit because obviously the universe should just bend itself around Supreme Commander Servalan (and often did).)

Among her other roles, I also saw her as Mariana in the BBC Shakespeare version of Measure for Measure. As I watched this after B7, it was nice to feel reassured that after the credits rolled, Mariana would clearly lose no time in stabbing Angelo in the back.

Somewhere in one of my stories Servalan and Dayna are sharing some rough-made wine and reminiscing about the days when they'd try to kill each other on sight.

And secretly out back the men who got in Servalan's way are slowly being turned on a spit.

R.I.P.

I confess to wish JP / Servalan had appeared in a Motorhead video :-)

Ace of Spades was going through my head earlier.

Her memory for a blessing.

I endured "White Mischief" just for her small part. She said later that she appeared in so many scenes despite having no lines because the director liked her so much.

I hoped one of those would be Killer Queen. Jacqueline Pearce was amazing as Servalan.

Godspeed, lady.

I was never a huge Servie fan - I just don't take to villains in fiction, a personal thing - but by god I appreciated how she played the hell out of it, and the series would not have been anything like the same cult classic without her.

OH NO. Really, it's difficult to imagine a universe without her.

Do you know, I'm reminded that I read an interview with Pearce in the 1980s in which she was in a very bad frame of mind. It was disturbing that she said that, in her opinion, Servalan was justified in all she did, but what was worse was how devastatingly depressed she appeared to be at that point in her life. I really hope things were much better for her later on.

Sad to hear about Jacqueline Pearce - I loved her as Servalan - she and Avon (Paul Darrow) were my favorites, although I am fond of all of the characters.

It's so sad. I never spoke to her, but I did see her at a one-day con-like thing and it felt like she glided everywhere, and like she too could wear an evening dress in a quarry and still look just as glamorous afterwards.

When I first watched Blake's 7 (in about 2000) my mum came in the room, saw Servalan, said "I remember her" and then sat and watched the rest of the episode. (Mum saw it when it was originally on TV, but hadn't since then)
