Still catching up!

Day 5

In your own space, promote three communities, challenges, blogs, pages, Twitters, Tumblrs or platforms and explain why you love them. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Some comms of my own:

[community profile] tardis_library - a Doctor Who reccing comm, made as a successor (but different from) the lovely [community profile] calufrax (now inactive, but with an amazing backlist that is still one of the best ways to get at gems from the Teaspoon Archive) - recs from all corners of the Whoniverse, posted anywhere, and in any media format. I'm so pleased with how this has taken off - more people & more recs are always welcome!

[community profile] historium which I have just set up as a central hub for all history fandoms, whether RPF or fictional to meet, post stuff, or use as a launching pad to set up more specific comms. It's had a great beginning & I need to get back to it once I am a little more recovered.

[community profile] tic_tac_woe or Apocabingo - a panfandom mini bingo challenge (using a tic tac toe 3x3 card) with all apocalyptic prompts! No deadlines, just sign up for a card & then end worlds/countries etc. or save them as you wish. (Fictionally, obviously.)

[community profile] who_allsorts - as an extra, because I meant to only include three, but I've a soft spot for this one. It's another Doctor Who community - an old-school prompt table with claiming, but with bite-sized tables. You can sign up for up to two at once and claims are very flexible (anyone can make the same claim, pairings/characters/eras/themes are all accepted, so you can choose how wide or narrow to make it). I created it with the object of enabling more DW content of all kinds, and I still think the prompt tables are very pretty!

Not-by-me communities:

[community profile] hc_bingo - still my favourite bingo, despite frequently being terrified by the prompts! It's very flexible about interpretation of prompts, and fills can be comfort, or hurt, or hurt/comfort as you please, and any fanworks are eligible. It runs once a year, but there are fun amnesty challenges and you only need to create one fanwork a year to stay eligible for the next round. It's been the perfect excuse to write a lot of things, and I've really enjoyed the Amnesty challenges when I've taken part. (Which are open to anyone if that works for you better than a bingo.)

[community profile] fic_rush - we need to sort ourselves out for another round soon, but this 48 hour actual ficathon (i.e. writing marathon) has been a wonderful supportive & social ingredient of my journalling life ever since I first plucked up the courage to join. There are ninja penguins, alien fish, glowsticks, and writerly pasta and attempts at galactic domination, but you don't have to worry about that. I mean, until and unless the penguins get you...

I enjoy recs and reccing comms, the main two of which I follow here are [community profile] fancake (though I never can get myself together to post for a theme) and [community profile] gensplosion for gen recs (which I have recced for, but am bad at doing), both of which have led me to some excellent fic, and both of which are panfandom.

There are so many comms I like! Here are, quickly, some more:

[community profile] who_at_50 (general DW comm, despite the name)

Bingos - [community profile] ladiesbingo, [community profile] trope_bingo, [community profile] allbingo and [community profile] genprompt_bingo. (Of these I particularly like [community profile] genprompt_bingo (which takes any kind of fills, despite the name, it's just that the prompts are gen prompts) but they're all good in their different ways.)

Icons - [community profile] iconthat, [community profile] icontalking, [community profile] icon_library, [community profile] icons10in20, [community profile] icons & [community profile] fandom_icons. (A mix of challenge and general posting comms.)

Which is probably enough from me, but I still like comms. And that's even before we get to all the exchanges or my other comms I run or co-mod...
thisbluespirit: (dw - seven & ace)
I decided to pick up a table at [community profile] who_allsorts for the Seventh Doctor Era. (I'm trying to decide whether or not to keep or drop my other current table, because I keep not writing it, as I claimed "Historical" as a theme and keep thinking I need to write epics, which was definitely not the point. But it was a very pretty table and I have one prompt filled, so I shall probably hang onto it and work on my wrong-headedness over time.)

Anyway, the table - 6 Prompts: Classic Who Quotes

#01 – Our Destiny is in the Stars #02 – Bad Laws Were Made to be Broken #03 – Playing at Tin Soldiers
#04 – I Deny This Reality #05 – There Should Have Been Another Way #06 – A Universe of Terrors
thisbluespirit: (doctor who)
Another 500 prompts fic! This one also doubles up for my "Historical" claim at [community profile] who_allsorts. I thought I must be nearing my extended deadline for a first work - and when I checked the date was 8 Feb 2018... just in time!

1. [community profile] hetswap has nominations open till 3rd Feb. (I expect not to be able to sign up, but I did nominate some things just in case. It was fun last year, and this year's mod looks a little more on the ball, too, so I'm not ruling things out yet.)

2. Sign-ups are ongoing to Monday for [community profile] worldbuildingex. (Which I haven't ever done because lack of brain, but seems v cool).

3. Let me pimp my own ongoing challenge comms, since I seem unlikely to be running ficathons any time soon: [community profile] who_allsorts, which is basically an old-style claims comm for Doctor Who but with many mini prompt tables ranging from sets of 3-20, fairly wide and laid back options on claiming (character/ship/era or theme if you prefer to mix it up character/pairing-wise) and you can make fills in any fanwork type. And I'm very proud of my pretty prompt sets. (Some of which, of course, came courtesy of you lot.)

Also [community profile] tic_tac_woe (aka apocabingo), the Apocalyptic mini bingo challenge! (Each card has nine apocalyptic prompts: get your bingo by destroying/saving the world at least three times in a row - all fandoms and origfic welcome, ditto all fandom types. The end of the world is an equal opportunity experience here. ;-p)
thisbluespirit: (Default)
[personal profile] el_staplador requested Meet Me at Midnight for the Fic Commentary Meme.

This was a recent one, written to finish off one of my remaining [community profile] who_allsorts prompts on my Fourth Doctor claim, the prompt being, "I will go alone," which, in conjunction with Four, made me think of the line from Androids of Tara where the Doctor says, "They always want you to go alone when you're walking into a trap, have you noticed that?" So I thought it could be fun to play with that being the Doctor's voice of experience speaking there.

I picked the prompt set out a couple of years ago now, and the vague idea had been lurking for a while, and then suddenly the full idea just struck me, and I wrote it and it was a lot of fun. I do have my original notebook version, but it didn't see a lot of changes, overall.

Each segment was, hopefully (and judging by comments, fairly successfully), a typical scene with each Team TARDIS of Four's era. (Well, barring Four, Romana & Adric, but the E-Space trilogy is still on my to-watch pile.)

Cut for various traps )
thisbluespirit: (writing)
(I'm sorry, my DW/LJ is v frivolous and always has been and there we are).

Now that I've posted that AAL! fic and one more Runaway Tales effort today, then not only have I achieved a bingo for [community profile] trope_bingo (even if it was probably too late to actually count), I have posted my stray [community profile] hc_bingo fills over there for amnesty, and now my stray [community profile] trope_bingo fills and a bingo for [community profile] origfic_bingo!

You know what this means? I am now at liberty to destroy the world multiple times over!* (Well, and also that I probably need to write something for [community profile] genprompt_bingo and my new table for [community profile] who_allsorts at some point & both are as yet virgin fields of unfilled squares, but hey, never mind. APOCALYPSE SUMMER! Or whatever, I'm very easily distracted and I still need to write that eighteen-month overdue [community profile] fandom_stocking S&S fic, and I'd like to write some more 500 Prompts too.)

But: *\o/*

I actually have no idea what I'm doing for any of the above, though. Suggestions are always welcome, even if I may well ignore them. (Bingos are for fun and id-pursuance!) ;-p

* For [community profile] tic_tac_woe. Not really, obviously, that would be wrong.

I actually wrote this at the same time as Meet Me At Midnight, but it's a little odd, and I forgot about it. However, it finishes off my last prompt for my Fourth Doctor table at [livejournal.com profile] dw_allsorts, so yay.

(And then hopefully no more! It takes quite a while to fiddle about and pack up stuff, and spoons too. Also rl was a little busier at the same time.)

1. I have been moving my communities! Some of these are still waiting on import, for various reasons (also the queue is still very long; it's definitely a mass back-up/exodus this time) and so have nothing on them yet, and some of them are more for archival purposes, but most are active or would happily be again, and certainly this mod is around for questions/tagging etc. if anyone else posts:

I moved [livejournal.com profile] dw_allsorts over here in January, and it is all shiny and ready at [community profile] who_allsorts. I won't close the other, but feel free to switch your claim over (or drop your claim and start a new one at Dreamwidth, I won't tell). Also I probably will only add new tables on this side now.

[livejournal.com profile] dw_straybunnies is now fully imported at [community profile] who_straybunnies! (It hasn't been active for a while, but as long as I'm still here, I'll be fine with people posting to it - it is/was a community for donating Doctor Who fanwork ideas (plotbunnies, if you'll forgive the tweeness, but it makes for a handy name) plus regular discussion of plot ideas we'd like to see and occasional challenges to fill some of the donated prompts.)

[livejournal.com profile] dw_guestfest is created now at [community profile] who_guestfest, but I won't import it until this weekend is over, as someone's still trying to write a last fic for this year's fest. Obviously, the ficathon is over for this year, so nothing will be happening there until it runs again.

[livejournal.com profile] house_of_eliott is now in progress to [community profile] house_of_eliott, hopefully before the LJ version entirely crumbles off a cliff. It's very tiny, but it's a general House of Eliott comm. (This is the only one I will be deleting, because it's so very tiny and crumbling and my co-mod has deleted their account, so it's on virtual point of collapse.)

[livejournal.com profile] cakefic is not yet in progress (but will be as soon as HoE finishes) and you'll find it at [community profile] cakefic. It's not exactly very active, I know, but I do mean to finally run a cakeficathon one day (and heaven forfend that cake fic should be lost)! ([personal profile] clocketpatch, shall I make you co-mod again?)

I am also co-mod of [livejournal.com profile] b7friday, which [personal profile] vilakins has imported to [community profile] b7friday and I hope to see if it's possible to revive it over there, as I think quite a lot of the B7 crew are more Dreamwidth based, such as there is in journal-land anyway). [personal profile] vilakins also imported [community profile] b7fic, and already runs [community profile] blakes7 (and foolishly just made me co-mod of both, which is new. Soon, I shall be supreme commander of the Federation and have all the best dresses!)

And I think I really am going to launch Apocabingo soon at [community profile] tic_tac_woe, but more about that anon!

Please feel free to join any of them you like, even the ones that are still slightly works in progress. I do mean to pimp [community profile] who_allsorts and [community profile] b7friday a bit, and of course [community profile] tic_tac_woe once I've firmed up the rules, and we'll see how it goes with the rest.

And, wow, no wonder that's been taking it out of me. *collapses* (Also, if you are not so much on Dreamwidth, or even if you are, and are feeling a little concerned about imported content, claiming your open ID is super-easy and seems to work like magic on assigning those posts and comments to your actual Dreamwidth account (providing you have one, of course) and then that allows you to edit/delete them as with the original.)

2. Also, in order to get me over the transition bump among other things, I've decided to turn off commenting on my crossposts for the next two months (at least). I've been trying to make sure I've granted access to everybody I can think first so you'll still be able to see and comment on flocked entries, but spotting who I've missed is rather like that game where you have a tray of objects and then take one or two away - and I was always rubbish at that game! So if I haven't yet, just point me in your direction at Dreamwidth. I am a terrible turncoat, I know, but I feel very happy about it! I hadn't realised how much worrying about LJ apocalypses was getting me down.

(tl;dr after this entry, you will have to click through on the link to comment, but I have faith in your ability to cope with slight extra clickiness, even if you judge me for it. ;-p)

I decided I would make another claim at [community profile] who_allsorts | [livejournal.com profile] dw_allsorts for the theme "Historical" and I have finally chosen my table, so all I have to do is fill one with a fanwork by 3 May (or else I might have to tell myself off). I like it, anyway*:

#04 – You cannot find the centre #05 – In the cold, glittering morning #06 – Another missing person
#07 – A sudden death #08 – Forgetting who I am #09 – Night descending

1. [community profile] halfamoon | [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon is back! A two week celebration of female characters in fandom, from 1-14 Feb.

(Even though I know it's coming, I never prepare, so I'll have to see if I can still do something...)

2. First proper draft of my NYR fic is typed up! Now for [community profile] hetswap... (I have an idea at least, but it does need to be more than a scribbled idea at some point soon; the deadline's the end of the month.)

3. [livejournal.com profile] dw_guestfest will be back soon. I just want to have a breather and get some words down for [community profile] hetswap first before I open it for prompts, but I'll post there presently and try and put together a 2017 schedule for the fest.

5. [community profile] who_allsorts is still a thing! As is [livejournal.com profile] dw_allsorts! I need to go claim myself a second table, for the theme "Historical." I'm excited. I shouldn't have signed up for ten more things than I needed to, though. (Sliiight exaggeration.)

(I'm not ignoring rl events, it's just... here be fannish distractions if anyone wants them, because we all need such things, whatever they may be. Others will bring the links and do the stuff, I shall just continue to try to get well and try to bring small good things and distractions for the moment. But sometimes you do feel the need to just say that, because WTH, indeed. :-/)

3. I was trying to write a letter yesterday for [community profile] hetswap so I can sign up (because that's the only way I get my requests together for these things) and realised I might just as well start it "Dear Paranoidangel..." instead of Dear Author. Unless of course, she doesn't sign up, in which case I may be unmatchable. Heh. We'll see! First I need to get back enough brain to write requests... (I'm sure tomorrow will be betterer!)

4. Thank you for all the [livejournal.com profile] dw_allsorts prompts! I've updated the choice of tables now and you provided some lovely ones! It was very helpful. :-)
thisbluespirit: (dw - one)
1. I am now an impatient Yuletider, waiting to have a present to shake! (Where O where is my fic; it's not as if the Deadline is yet to come and I'm being unreasonable! Oh, wait, yes I am...) I am also waiting for two other people to have gifts to I can post their treats. (Which technically I can do anyway, one way or the other, but I'll wait at least a bit longer now. And one of them is not yet typed up and may not work anyway - scary fandom is scary! But shiny prompt is shiny, so shiny...)

2. I was thinking about [livejournal.com profile] dw_allsorts a while ago and wondering, for various reasons, about opening it up to be just table-claiming and not claiming for a specific person/pairing/era, and then I thought that it has tiny prompt tables (3-20 prompts depending) and so that's part of the point. But then I thought about adding in an extra option to liven things up and so now you can claim a theme instead if you wish! (So, say "historicals" or "Villains" or a trope you like or "Crossovers" or "Episode Tags" or "Favourite Pairings"). I am ridiculously pleased with this idea and now want to claim a further table. I think one could go well with my [community profile] genprompt_bingo table! I'm amused at myself; I've finally worked out how to make my own comm more exciting to me. Anyway, I made a post at the comm for that and a couple of other things.

It's been a while since I've mentioned it, so *pimps at the worst time of the year* : [livejournal.com profile] dw_allsorts is a low-pressure mini-prompt table community for Doctor Who (of all flavours, including spin-offs). All fanworks are welcome as fills and minimums are pretty minimal! Tables come in sets of 3,6,9,12,15 & 20; you can sign up for up to two claims at a time and you can claim any Character, Pairing, Era, Spin-Off, or Theme that you wish. There are no actual deadlines, but if your first fanwork doesn't appear within three months of signing up, your claim will be removed from the list as inactive, but you can always renew it or pick it up again at any time. People can also suggest new prompt tables if they have ideas. Once you complete your claim, you get a banner of variable quality as made by me (except if you are me, because I draw the line at making myself banners). All the details are here if you want to know more.

3. I have a [community profile] fandom_stocking hung up here, should anyone be interested. (Sign-ups are now over and the stockings are gradually being hung up. I am bookmarking stockings and vaguely hoping that I'll be able to make at least the odd icon here and there, post-Yuletide writing, post-being away etc. etc. and dreaming of ficlets. Who knows?)

1. Yuletide noms closed this morning - next up comes the fun! The full tag set, letters appearing, making requests! \o/

(And guess what? I nommed the 1968 TV Dracula as my third fandom. Just as I was about to repent my folly, some nonnie commented on the fandom promotion thread to say that they liked the look of it and that was all the encouragement I needed. So I will have three impossible fandoms on my request list. /sheepish)

But here we go again, folks! *bounces*

2. [livejournal.com profile] het_reccers is having an anniversary Trope Bingo, so I requested a card, because that should make me, you know, actually rec something during the month. Cut for image & mildly NSFW trope names )

3. I made a post to one of my comms - [livejournal.com profile] dw_allsorts (the Doctor Who mini-table prompt comm*) asking for suggestions for prompt tables. I wondered if anyone here would have any suggestions. There's more details over at the post, and there isn't a desperate need - it's just that I know everyone is so different and I'm very aware that all of these tables were made by me, so I thought it might be quite nice to have some by other people? If anyone has any ideas, or would have joined in if there was a table like x, now's your chance! (Also, if anyone would like to suggest a theme for a table/tables, that would also be cool. I didn't think of that when making the post).

4. I wrote a thing for [livejournal.com profile] runaway_tales the other day! And so what, you cry? Well, it was not for Heroes of the Revolution, it was for The Pirate Queen (another of the three fake shows I did at the time, only one that had current actors and was In Space! With Pirates! (Well, Pirates-ish.) I had some thoughts about it, so I might occasionally write some bits for it? I don't know, but there's this, which I did hastily for the Flavour of the Day:

Beneath My Dignity (All ages, 444 words. Lio Hadwin, Arkryte II.) Lio gets lumbered with his nemesis on an away trip.

thisbluespirit: (dw - amy)
Day 15: In your own space, create your own challenge. What’s something you want to see more people doing in fandom? Is there something fun you’ve tried that you think other people would enjoy if they gave it a go? Dare your friends to try it out, and have fun with it.

As it happens, I am setting up a challenge (maybe even two). Anyway, this one is something I thought of around 2010, I think, and made a comm for it while really ill and bored in early 2012. And, while prompt tables and LJ itself, I suppose, are now out of date, I think it's time to let it out into the wild, so, nice timing, [community profile] snowflake_challenge.

It's this, a mini prompt table challenge, for Doctor Who: [livejournal.com profile] dw_allsorts

Anyway, the reasoning was that there was no comm with set tables left for Doctor Who (there used to be whoverse30 and I think one or two others) - only [community profile] dw100 (weekly prompts for drabbles) and I think [livejournal.com profile] doctorwho_100, which was a 100-prompt table. So there should be something in between for a large fandom like Doctor Who. But even 20-50 prompts is a lot, so I came up with this. (All the prompt tables are between 3 and 20.)

It is pretty much ready, so I will put it on [livejournal.com profile] who_daily very soon. In the meantime, if any of you feel so kind as to take a look and see if there are any errors or obviously confusing things, I'd be grateful. Or if you have an idea for a prompt table to add! (I'd give you credit, of course.)

And, of course, it is ready to go, so anyone wanting to actually sign up and create stuff, do!! I'd love you to be a guinea pig bwahahahaha do that. Feel free.

Thank you! (♥)
