thisbluespirit: (librarians)
Some nice things:

1. Trailer for the new Librarians series! It looks just as fun as before! I have NO idea how I will see it, but I've been missing having a fun magic TV series so much, and especially The Libs. (My usual method was to wait for the UK DVD release and then rewatch it all to death, cheering myself up muchly. ha bloody ha, as they say.)

2. I don't know what was in the water re. my fandoms for last Yuletide, but not only have I continued to have much fun with [personal profile] edwardianspinsteraunt and The Winslow Boy, but someone showed up this week on tumblr to first shower love on my for writing the only Jack/Angela The Net fic on the internet, but then wrote their own start of an AU, which promises to be fun, and turned up on AO3. (The Net is v hoky, but also deeply nineties, and Sandra Bullock and Jeremy Northam play a fun game of cat and mouse, plus JN, a cyber terrorist, fails to win because he doesn't know when to use an escape key, which should get some sort of prize for popcorn-worthy silliness.)

Alive on Paper (2842 words) by theelectriccat

3. Talking of The Winslow Boy, I am now watching the 1970s BBC version from The Rattigan Collection - I didn't entirely mean to, but I finally treated myself to rewatching the 1980s Browning Version with Ian Holm & Judi Dench & Michael Kitchen (&, as it turns out, a wee Stephen Mcintosh as Taplow and, briefly, Imogen Stubbs as Mrs Gilbert) for the first time in 30+ years, and it was on the same disc. I wasn't sure if I was ready to be fair to an alternate version, but it's got such different emphases etc, plus I can see more of where the 1999 does differ from the play, and it's not only really good in itself, but it's fascinating. Sir Robert has just turned up, and I was intrigued to see what Alan Badel would be like, because I mainly know him from being the perfectly OTT saving grace of duff 1960s films, and it's a very different performance to anything I had expected he might do (but good obv.) Eric Porter has rocked up for duty, aged up as per usual. I am happy to see him, but I am beginning to worry that he spent the entirety of the 60s and 70s as an aged up Edwardian gent. XD

4. My main way of calming myself lately re. the whole world being what it is has somehow turned out to be watching the better end of the Thomas More vids for The Tudors (with occasional relapses into Obidala vids, as per 2020). (It was because I knew I had found a good one, but I'd lost it, but I rediscovered it last week. It turned out I had saved it, but it was to Hallelujah and I'd assumed no good could come of fandom's eternal use and abuse of every version of that, and then another one, if with some dialogue going on there, and apparently angst and dodgy hat-wearing angles help? Plus, I'll give the person who couldn't resist making one to I'm Just More points for the lols.)

... oh drat, late for dinner now!
thisbluespirit: (TV)
I was going to make a proper post with more things in, but guess what?

festivids is live! ([community profile] festivids is basically the vidding equivalent of [community profile] yuletide and it is amazing. If you like vids at all, go forth and rifle through it and enjoy.)

BUT ALSO, I looked at the fandoms listed this morning when impatient for reveals to happen and THERE WAS SAPPHIRE & STEEL!! Readers, readers, when it went live, the vid itself did not disappoint - it captures the sheer weirdness of the show and its central duo so well.

I am now off to see what else the collection has to offer, but a brilliant S&S vid in a world that sadly has far too few S&S vids must obviously eclipse all else for me.

Happy 61st Doctor Who anniversary! <3

If you like audios, Big Finish are giving away a free download of one of their audios, The Five Companions to celebrate!

Also, a really sweet First Doctor Era fanvid that someone just posted:

thisbluespirit: (b7 - vila & servalan)
Today hasn't been the greatest day healthwise (again), but not a bad one in any other sense! And I thought I would make a quick post of 3 things that have brightened it and guess what? I have already forgotten the third thing as usual. (oh hai brain fog.)

1. I made a gifset of The Winslow Boy (1999) for tumblr. Which I was highly pleased with in itself (until I realised that the aspect ratio is still Not Absolutely Right on most of them, but shhhh. i posted before i discovered that, in the midst of my shiny achievement smugness, alas). But as you can see if you click the link, today a stranger on the internet reblogged it with the best kind of tags - that it had caused them to watch it and love it too! \o/

It is nice to have engendered a tiny bit of happiness in the world. ♥

2. Random new Blake's 7 vid appeared on my flist! I nearly fell over and had to re-check the fandom three times, but it was B7 and it's good fun, for those who would be interested over here.

3. Please insert your own third thing here. The management apologises for its repeated brain failure. Works are ongoing, but may be pretty much permanent at this point. ;-p

Now, I think yesterday I edited 2 short fic pieces into submission and if that is so, I might even be able to post one, but I shall go and see. ♥

and in less good things: my bookmarking site i use seems to be entering its death throes, which is a bit worrrying. i suppose i must endeavour to Find Another.
thisbluespirit: (dw - twelve)
I had to go out yesterday (last official appointment for a while, hopefully!), so am all tired/ill again for a bit, but in the meantime, have some things:

1. [community profile] no_true_pair's spring mini round is open for sign-ups! (It's like the 15 characters meme, except you actually write the random prompts. The mini round is for only 4 characters, but you can have multiple sets of four if you want. I don't know if I'll manage anything, but I shall try and think of some characters sets - there's no penalty and who knows? Better to sign up and see what fun prompts I get than not!)

2. The vidder who made a lovely whole-era First Doctor vid has done one for the Second Doctor's era and it's pretty great and adorable and cheering:

3. Courtesy of [personal profile] persiflage_1 who alerted me to this on tumblr: 1000 radio plays have been returned to the BBC! (They're going to actually broadcast some of them as well over the upcoming months. And, as ever, BBC Sounds is not region-locked, unlike the rest of the Beeb.)

4. Gifs of Jacqueline Pearce in Ep3 of the 1974 BBC David Copperfield what I made )

5. As usual, I'm sure there was something else! Ah well... (Tell me what it was in the comments, lol.)

thisbluespirit: (Dracula)
[personal profile] john_amend_all reblogged this on tumblr and it made me smile. I thought a few of you might get a kick out of it too.

So, obviously Gilbert & Sullivan totally did a Dracula, right?

:-D

(There's a plain Dracula one here, but I thought this one with the BSD clips just made it all the funnier and fitted really well.)

Festivids!

4 Feb 2024 09:49 am
thisbluespirit: (TV)
It's that time of year again: [community profile] festivids is live!

(Looking at it, I know so little this year, though, but I shall be off to check those out.)
thisbluespirit: (dw - clara)
It's Doctor Who day! (I mean, I realise all the US people are all off celebrating something else, but clearly that is obviously much less important. ;-p Though I hope you also enjoy yourselves!)

A multi-era vid that, though I've recced this before at [community profile] tardis_library, I don't think I've ever posted it here - Regeneration by Andriy Griffin.

I love this - it's such a great look at the show through the years, the way that change is essential to it, both in the optimism of adventure and friendship and renewal, but the balance of that in that every friend must leave, every Doctor must fall and die, and all things must change, whether we like it or not. (And quite often, DW fans, being as resistant to change as most human beings, do not like it, very vocally.)

Anyway, congratulations to the most go-anywhere, be-anything show ever made, the longest running Science Fiction TV show in history, and the cheap little show that nobody but William Hartnell thought would last more than 13 episodes in 1963-4, was wiped and burned in the 1970s, and which got cancelled for good by the BBC in 1989, but just regenerated again, because of course it did in the end. It's always exactly the same and yet completely different, and I love it very much.

Somehow, it's still here, or most of it is, one way or another, and so are we. ♥
thisbluespirit: (spooks - zaf)
1. [community profile] no_true_pair is gearing up for its Spring mini-round with sign-ups opening on March 12th! Given that I had such a lovely time with it in September, I'll definitely be giving it another go. I have to decide on my character list - only four characters this time! 8-o (If it's the same as the main round, you can have up to 3 lists, so I'm thinking I might do at least two and then see what I fancy writing the most. XD)

2. [community profile] hurtcomfortex is still in sign-ups. I don't think I should do it, really, all considered, but I always PINE for it (I could be my own OW tag for it: "Exchange Participant/Unsuitable Exchange They Are Nevertheless Pining Hopelessly For") so I'm keeping an eye on the sign-ups and, yep, as ever with this one, I have like 1 match again. Two, depending what I offer. BUt you never know, what if something jumped out and begged me to write a SHORT thing for it and then I could sign up (but oh no all those tags)...

3. Marginal March, a comment fest for Minor Characters

4. I no sooner said that Craddock and Co had gone from BBC Sounds when I looked, than the BBC decided to repeat it and now it's there again! So if anyone prefers that method, here it is, and they've reached all three eps now (it was still only 2 yesterday): https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/series/b00d2t72

5. I reached s3 of Death in Paradise (people who know will know what that means XD) but the BBC did compensate immediately because the following three eps have had Peter Davison (grumpy writer suspect), Josette Simon (fearsome judge suspect), and Raza Jaffrey (airline pilot suspect). Raza was a wonderful surprise, because he went off to the US to be in things I don't watch, so I was just: RAZA!!!! (Spooks fans will understand, because Zaf= <3<3<3 Also he is very illegally pretty, it's true. ETA: the motive for murder was basically jealousy over Raza, which, I mean. legit.)

My resolution to stop at this point was therefore broken. I'll see how long this stint of Actors From My All Time Fave Shows continues, lol, and in the meantime, here's a very lovely, fun/cute Richard and Camille fanvid by Odessie I found on AO3.
thisbluespirit: (avengers)
Just a flaily drive-by post because here is a cheerful thing - [community profile] festivids is live!!

I have watched about 3 or 4 vids so far, but there are plenty of things to appeal to people in these parts. There is another beautiful Ghosts vid (which inevitably made me tear up a bit halfway through, from which you can tell the tone is perfect <3) but the reason why I am posting now is first and foremost:

There is an Assassination Bureau vid! So now I can point to it and go: look! see! this is why you must watch this film! it is a film with all the things. <- /points

I mean, as if "Diana Rigg is a journalist who hires Oliver Reed to get his own assassination bureau to assassinate him and then they have a giant assassination chase across pre-WWI Europe while she tries to report on it. shenanigans go down." was not enough on its own, pfft.

anyway, that is one nice thing. [community profile] festivids!
thisbluespirit: (dw - tardis)
... first off to [personal profile] graycardinal and [personal profile] selenay - I hope you both have great days!

But, of course, also to one of the longest-running and probably the very best television show of them all - Doctor Who!

Have a little sort of all-eras credits/tribute to everybody:

And a more straightforward fun little all-eras vid (not quite up to date):

Happy 59th anniversary! ♥

I am sorry, I am still being all intermittent, but life, stuff, you know. But I have watched some [community profile] festivids offerings already and must share, even though I haven't nearly finished.

So, far, I have loved:

You Might Think - completely adorable Pushing Daisies Ned/Chuck vid of not touching (because death, you know how it is), which instantly just made me want to rewatch PD all over again.

That Don't Impress Me Much - C.J. being very unimpressed at all her male colleagues, really great fun.

Our House - a Ghosts vid! I really enjoyed the series last year, and this definitely captures the madness.

Victorious, for Moulin Rouge. I was so curious when I saw it about what someone would do with MR, given the nature of it, and this was just great, shifting the tone with the choice of music, but simultaneously staying really true, and v dramatically edited.

Body Talks, Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers, just delightful.

Plus, I have now accidentally done [community profile] snowflake_challenge Day 8 (rec at least three fanworks you didn't create). \o/

And I haven't by any means finished yet with [community profile] festivids yet, but I can't watch too many things in a row.

And of course, to the very best TV show ever - 56 years and counting!

Have a celebratory vid:

A thing that looks like a police box standing in a junkyard - it can go anywhere in time and space? But that's ridiculous! )
thisbluespirit: (b7 - avon)
What's to say about Avon? Blake's 7 is amazing and Avon and Paul Darrow are just such a huge part of that, which is obvious after even a peek at the fandom. Or any of a number of books that have shamelessly borrowed a certain snarky computer genius anti-hero. (Somewhere there's a webpage dedicated to Book Characters Who Are In Fact Avon). So, I've got some clips, but honestly, he's such a huge part of the show - just go watch Blake's 7 and you'll understand.

Some fellow Classic Who fans told me to do it 10 years ago and I eventually if a little grudgingly agreed and what followed was one of the best rides of my life. And I say that as someone who - barring Classic Who - did not go round watching old Brit TV back then. (I blame B7 for teaching me that old TV could be awesome, so.) I've no regrets whatsoever, not even Ben Steed. It's the only show to ever have caused me to stand up and applaud when it finished and that after it also made me fall off the sofa because I was laughing so hard (the SFX are quite, ahem, something) on top of breaking my heart at least three or four times. And I've seen several of my flist go the same way since with pretty much the same reaction. That's Blake's 7 for you. And Avon.

The show remains complex and painfully relevant, its characters are vivid and compelling and amazingly, terribly, wonderfully dressed (often in costumes specially made down the local sex shop), it's simultaneously a big messy SF Shakespearean tragedy, crack, and Robin Hood in space meets 1984 and has giant ants, my favourite villain ever, Colin Baker with a big gun, Orac, and JARVIK (a MANLY man; it's only fair to warn you). It is all the things. And Avon.

It's written in the DNA of almost every SFF show made after it for a reason. (Firefly, Farscape, and Babylon 5 being the most obvious. Firefly and B5 even quote it directly, B5 at least twice, including the Avon quote in this post header.)

So, go and watch it. And unless you tend to prefer to know what's coming, if you can keep unspoiled, even better. As I said, it's quite the ride. Even if S1 is a bit slow.

Unspoilery:

Blake's 7 - Series One - Avon - Do I Have a Choice? (Fanvid, inc. audio)

Clips:
Avon & Jenna in Episode 3 "Cygnus Alpha", debating whether or not to take the money and run or stay with Blake.
Avon Alone - Avon in S2; he doesn't need anybody else to survive. Except Orac.

Contains some spoilers:

Blake's 7 Hollywood Style (whole show fan trailer)

Blake's 7: Eliminate Blake fanvid, but also serves as good trailer.

Spoilery as hell (hell being the operative word):

Last Man Standing (Avon fanvid)
All Fall Down (Avon fanvid)

So, yes, just watch it. Episode 1 "The Way Back" is here for those in R1 who are tragically and wrongfully deprived of a DVD release by the Terry Nation Estate. ;-p

(Here at the end of this post let me pause to also remember with much pleasure Paul Darrow's amazing microphone chewing in the Kaldor City audios, a B7/DW crossover masterpiece of, er, whatever it is they are. They would not have been the same crack without that for a minute. <3)

So, yes. Thanks for all the snark and all the rest, and so long, Mr Darrow. RIP.
thisbluespirit: (spooks - Ruth!)
Just a head's up that [community profile] festivids is live! Basically, if you want to find an amazing vid for something you never thought anyone would vid, go over there and have fun!

(I haven't explored very much yet; I watched a Victoria Wood tribute that was lovely and joyful but then made me cry because apparently I'm still not over that.)
thisbluespirit: (spooks - Ruth!)
Re. the name change - nothing is wrong and the only drama was my accidental deletion! Apologies if I alarmed anyone. I didn't exactly plan to do either when I woke up this morning, but it fell out that way.

I came up with my user name a long time ago when Spooks was only at S5, and not finished 8 years ago (!) to use on a Spooks forum as a Ruth Evershed reference. All the obvious Ruth-related names were taken and she was missing at that point, so lost_spook. It's just that 'spook' is also a racial slur in some places (which obviously I didn't know back then, but it's why the show was MI5 in the US), so someone gave me a rename token to fix it, and now I have.

It's a bit weird to say goodbye to it, because it's been me in most places for over 10 years now, but, as you can see from above, it was never carefully chosen, it was just nicely oblique for a general fannish name.

What I didn't mean to do was delete my tumblr, but on reflection, I'm not sad about that either. I'll probably make a new one next week or some time to salvage some of my lost posts via people's reblogs, but there was very little there to mind losing, and it feels oddly better to have it gone, and if I do start another one, it'll be easier.

[personal profile] thisbluespirit is also nothing profound, though - I played around in my head with things I like + variations on 'spook' - and hopefully it will not have any such unpleasant associations for anyone.

(I also feel sure [personal profile] thisbluespirit must be cooler than lost_spook, but that, I fear, can only be delusion, as I am very much still me and, alas, Uncool. ;-D)

I still love Ruth Evershed to pieces, though. (Nicola Walker is amazing in anything, of course, but Ruth is how she won my heart forever and other characters cannot compete. Also Ruth is many many things, but not cool. I love her. Did I mention that already?)

Nowhere in the country is safe from her )
thisbluespirit: (ouat)
[community profile] equinox_exchange went live over the weekend, and I have had a chance to watch a few vids. (It's a small collection, but there are still 34 vids in 32 fandoms and I need to poke around a bit more). Anyway, in the meantime, here are some excellent vids I have watched so far, all on this time's theme of Alternate Realities & Time Travel:

From the Other Side (OUaT) (I am just so thrilled to find an OUaT meta vid like this! It didn't even get vidded in the Spring when Fairy Tales was the theme. This one explores reality/fairy tales/other version of fairy tales/other realms as alternate realities, and I do love that though I don't think it has the shot of Charming with sword in one hand and mobile phone in the other, it does capture similar OUaT juxtapositions like Cinderella on a motorcycle and the silver slippers from Oz on the table with a bottle of whisky.)

Into Dust Multi-Trek melancholic vid of alternate realities that never were.

All Night (Monsters Inc, very cute!)

What We Live For (Lovely multi-Doctor vid, although New Who only, sadly, and shot before there was much 13 to work with. It's wonderful, though; possibly my favourite so far.)

start over (reset) (Star Trek: Voyager) This cleverly manages to be a Five + 1 times vid (Five things that never happened and one that did).

Unrelated, but for those who may be interested, I lurked in the alleyway successfully and got my bin back.
thisbluespirit: (adam adamant lives!)
Apparently.

But, look, look, I found a fab Avengers tribute! The lack of Avengers vids (given its iconic cult status, Emma Peel generally, visual quirkiness, and comparative prettiness in old Brit TV terms) is just baffling, and the only really good one I ever found got taken down by YouTube, but here AT LAST is another one:

The Avengers - Blank Space [John Steed & Emma Peel] from Hepburned on Vimeo.

Good news, too: they have made three others which are all v good, including an also brilliant Emma Peel tribute Short Skirt, Long Jacket (in case you need reminding that Diana Rigg is an actualfax goddess) and two Emma/Steed vids, one of which is unfairly sad (although the other is happy and quirky.

(Also relevant to people's interests round here: I haven't watched their other stuff yet, but on YT it seems to mainly consist of old film tributes and if they're all up to this kind of standard, they should be worth going through.)
thisbluespirit: (Default)
I will post again sometime soon, when it feels safe to believe it might stop being summer enough, or when I need to babble because summer or whatever, but in the meantime, an excellent thing I saw around and about:

Beautiful, beautiful multifandom vid (of fandom and dreaming) by Gwyn - and the vidpost is here if you want to tell the vidder how great it is, because it is.
thisbluespirit: (s&s - silver)
It's now summer, so I am erratic. Sorry about this: sometimes I will be around and comment, sometimes I won't. It all depends. But it's otherwise okay at the moment! And I spent some more birthday money and have some new old telly to watch. (It might even have some Mr. Maxwell in it somewhere. *looks innocent*)

Random good things:

1. OUaT vid for the most adorable thing that came out of S7 - that is, Alice/Robin (or Tilly/Margot, as you prefer), done as a fake movie trailer that should totally be a thing:

2. Mr Bennet Travels Through Time by A Marguerite. Fic in which Mr Bennet is in fact a time traveller who can't get home again. Crack that winds up making so much sense - this is fab. I stumbled over it somewhere and am v glad I did.

3. Beautiful tribute vid for Princess Leia across the whole SW saga - here by beccatoria, for VidUKon.

4. Last but not least, [community profile] hc_bingo is open for another round!
thisbluespirit: (OUaT - belle)
[community profile] festivids 2018 has gone live!

([community profile] festivids is pretty much like Yuletide for vidders, being a vidding exchange for small fandoms that takes place at a similar time of the year. I have never taken part, but I appreciate the resulting vids hugely! It's always a complete delight to dip in and discover vids for things you'd never even dreamed of vids for.)

You can find all the vids here, and if you enjoy vids at all, I recommend taking a look!

Here are some excellent vids that I have very much enjoyed so far, but there are many more, for many more fandoms over there:

Adventures of Robin Hood (1938)
Not Gonna Take It
Whole film: oh, we're not gonna take it anymore

Dead Like Me
So Sad, So Lonely
Mason: "I don't want nobody/ Nobody don't want me/ I'm so sad, so lonely/ And I'm always landing on my feet"

Meet Mason: a degenerate, pathetic, and overall, hot mess, of a grim reaper. (And we can't help but love him for it!)

Eureka
I Am A Scientist
Whole show (like, more whole show than any other vid I have ever seen): The madcap scientists of the town called Eureka...this is their story.

The Librarians
Team
Ensemble: They're on each other's team

Much Ado About Nothing (1993)
Much Ado About Nothing
Whole film: A fun look at the characters of Much Ado About Nothing (1993 version)

Pollyanna (2003)
This Stray Italian Greyhound
Pollyanna & Aunt Polly: "What do I do with a love that won't sit still?"

Sense & Sensibility (1995)
All This and Heaven Too
Marianne & Elinor: "The heart is hard to translate."

Three Men & a Baby/Three Men and a Little Lady
Don't Stop Me Now
Mary & her three daddies: Accidental baby (child) acquisition: it's nothing but fun, fun, fun!

(But, people, there is a FRAGGLE VID, why is there a FRAGGLE VID?? 0_o*)

1. Just a small good thing in the world: I don't know whether this got taken down, or I just lost my links, or whatever, but yesterday I was very excited to see that Odessie/Nancy Blackett was putting some old vids up on AO3, including the marvellous DW female companion tribute:

Just A Girl which is still one of the best companion tributes I've seen.

(I've made sure to add it to my online bookmarks this time). A good thing indeed.
thisbluespirit: (blake's 7)
I am too tired to be posting today, but I just realised that not only was I away for Gauda Prime Day, but I missed Blake's 7's 40th anniversary yesterday: on 2nd Jan 1978, the BBC screened "The Way Back" and gave us one of the most influential and important SF shows ever made.

It was bleak, but almost never joyless. It was 1984 and Robin Hood in space at the same time; Chris Boucher snark and Terry Nation cliches; and full of the most terrible and inappropriately hilarious SFX you've ever seen (I have not ever recovered from the arrival of the Michelin Men in the middle of one of Robert Holmes's darkest scripts) and the most amazing (in all possible senses of the word) costumes for all, but especially Servalan. And, of course, it has unforgettable characters - every one of our heroes (if you can call them that) and villains as well as so many of the guest characters, even to passing ordinary Federation troopers with an opinion.

Happy fortieth anniversary, ruby-red in blood, B7! Sadly, you've never ceased to be relevant.

I have nothing new to bring, but even if you have no time or patience for such elderly TV, here is this piece of meta I have linked to before. It is short and non-spoilery and talks about why Blake's 7 is important, from someone who did grow up in an oppressive society, and I hope you can find a moment to look at it, if nothing else.

If you want to know what B7 is, I wrote a Non-Spoilery Guide a long time ago and [personal profile] aralias also wrote one, with different emphasis, more meta, and some excellent quotes here.

Plus, also non-spoilery (although I should note that I would have killed anyone who spoiled me for future costumes on my first watch, so YMMV), a vid tribute to its fashion sense (or lack of it): Fashion is Danger.

Also some favourite vids that I have linked to before - most of which are spoilery, however! (Spoilers are hard to avoid when it comes to B7):

The Cave
My Life Would Suck Without You
Right Said Fred (non-spoilery crack vid)
(We Will Be) Invincible (Tribute to the female characters)
Blood Money (Blake & Avon)
Servalan Music Video
Intergalactic Space Crusaders
