[Just like Blue Peter, appropriately - a post I made earlier!]
I decided to put together a rec set for
hc_bingo square "Shipwrecked" - and here it is! \o/ There are a mix of fandoms with a mix of sailing ship wrecks and space ship wrecks and all contain at least some measure of hurt/comfort.
Warnings/content notes in the recs are minimal, but all links go to AO3 where they are fully tagged and rated - please note all original author's tags, warnings and ratings etc. at the link.
Shipwrecked
Doctor Who
1. Cold and Hot by
Heimeldat (G, 8363 words. Seventh Doctor & Ace McShane.) Ace and the Doctor are just finishing a mission aboard a sailing ship when they get washed overboard in a storm, and a simple job turns into a struggle for survival.
Ace and the Doctor are shipwrecked and have to find ways to help each other survive, and get well and truly put through the wringer in the process. It's vividly written and Ace and Seven are very much their wonderfully complicated selves, and their relationship shines through all the trials.
2. The Girl in the Coat by
iSaphura (G, 834 words. Sixth Doctor & Peri Brown.) The Doctor pulled off his coat and wrapped it around Peri. "Keep good care of this for me, promise?" / "Pr-promise?" Peri stammered. / Before she could protest, the Doctor scooped her up and hoisted her over the side. Someone below shouted something up at them. The Doctor whispered, "I'll find you," and let go.
A quite different take on the same Whumptober prompt as the above fic and also showcasing the depth of another Doctor-companion relationship. It's a short and painfully sweet experimental piece, written through outsider POV dialogue only, showing Peri's grief at the loss of the Doctor in a shipwreck and her utter faith that he will return - all while wrapped in That Coat.
The Goblin Emperor
3. A Rock in the Ocean by
Serenade (Teen, 1797 words. Csevet Aisava/Maia Drazhar.) Maia and Csevet are shipwrecked together.
Beautifully written post-canon desert island piece - Maia and Csevet are the survivors of another airship wreck and Maia learns the true extent of Csevet's devotion as they have to rely on each other to stay alive.
Good Omens
4. Testament of War by
Snowfilly1 (Teen, 2175 words. Aziraphale/Crowley.) 'Crowley? What are you doing here?’ / 'Ship sunk. Hit by a U-Boat. Hastur's out there, couldn't stop him. Cold,' and that last word comes out despite his best efforts.” / Aziraphale runs into a badly hurt Crowley during World War One.
Crowley gets sunk by a U-Boat in the middle of World War I - and finds himself in a hospital on Malta that includes an angel on its staff. This is both a really sweet historical encounter between them (in one of the times we don't see in flashback) and also a painful look at Crowley's distress over the sheer savagery of the War playing out in front of him. (Not that he'd put it like that, of course, but...)
Legends of Tomorrow
5. Time Stream to the Left, Legends to the Right (stuck in the middle remix) by
red_b_rackham (G, 4218 words. John Constantine, Sara Lance/Ava Sharpe, Mick Rory, Charlie, Nate Heywood, Zari Tarazi, Behrad Tarazi, Gary Green. Something super weird happens to the Waverider, leaving the Legends stranded and in danger—but not exactly together. So, basically, just another Tuesday. (Oneshot.))
The Waverider is wrecked in the time stream and splintered into five different parts of existence. This fic has a pitch-perfect missing episode feel for the later Legends series and it's a delight. Not only does it deal with a shipwreck of sorts but in brilliantly stranding the Legends in the worst possible-seeming duos, it also features several metaphorical potential shipwrecks in the making - but which, of course, lead to unexpected bonding, unwilling huddling for warmth, and generally coping in true screw-ups-for-the-better style.
Sapphire & Steel
6. Scattering like light by
theseatheseatheopensea (g, 3173 words. Sapphire, Silver & Steel.) There will be other shipwrecks. And they will all hurt. Sapphire knows what time can do.
Beautifully weird and haunting missing assignment, capturing both the strangeness of the elements and their eerie work, as well as the feel of the sea - and also the strength of the bond between Sapphire, Steel and Silver to bring Sapphire back when she's lost in the echoes of a shipwreck.
Sapphire & Steel/Sid Halley Series
7. Stalk On by
Cyphomandra (G, 6074 words. Sid Halley & Charles Roland, Sapphire & Silver & Steel.) Far up in the stretches of night; night splits and the dawn breaks loose; / I, through the terrible novelty of light, stalk on, stalk on; / Those great sea-horses bare their teeth and laugh at the dawn. W.B. Yeats, High Talk / Sid spends another pleasant evening at Aynsford.
Brilliant and unexpected crossover between Sapphire & Steel and Dick Francis's Sid Halley books, in which a shipwreck from Admiral Roland's past comes back to haunt him, rather too literally for anyone's liking. It'll take three mysterious strangers and Sid's refusal to let time anomalies take his father-in-law to stop them. This is beautifully done and perfectly welded together, and all the characters are perfectly painted.
Star Trek: Voyager
8. Eidolon by
Cyllene (Mature, 17,877 words. Chakotay/Kathryn Janeway, Tuvok, OCs.) When Chakotay is possessed by an alien, Janeway faces both physical and emotional trials to save him.
A long and satisfyingly plotty piece - in order to deal with an alien possessing Chakotay, Janeway deliberately crash lands onto a nearby planet and has to find a way to get her first officer back before she herself succumbs to a local poison. Gripping and excellent (and the start of a series if you enjoy this and are left wanting more.)
Star Wars: The Clone Wars
9. Snips and Skyguy by
Lif61 (Teen, 1030 words. Anakin Skywalker & Ahsoka Tano.) A Separatist battleship collides with the Galactic starcruiser that Anakin and Ahsoka are on. They desperately need to get to an escape pod, but with Anakin injured, things seem hopeless. Anakin isn't the only one needing help; Ahsoka needs it too.
Sweet and niftily done exploratin of Anakin and Ahsoka's Master-Padawan bond as they crash the ship in a fight - and have to work to save each other in turn.
Twelfth Night
10. Stranger in Paradise by
VampirePam (Teen, 306 words. Antonio/Sebastian. AU.) Shipwrecked on a deserted island, Sebastian and Antonio find themselves with no remaining excuses.
A small twist to canon allows the inevitable to happen between these two - slight, but lovely, well written AU ficlet that's worth a second glance.
