thisbluespirit: (1980s UNIT 2)
[personal profile] thisbluespirit
I was planning to write more of my final UNIT 1980s story (so I can get on and write other things), but spent Sunday writing a 1980s UNIT fic sparked off by [livejournal.com profile] belantana and then yesterday writing the following fic, when [livejournal.com profile] jjpor threw yet another plot bunny at me, and this one bit. He suggested Jack should meet my UNIT OCs. And also that this was of course the sort of thing that would make the universe implode and could never happen... Obviously, I had to write it.

Story: Knave of Hearts
Author: [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook
Rating: All Ages / PG
Word Count: 4400
Characters/Pairings: Captain Jack Harkness, Colonel Crichton, & my OCs; Tilly Holmes, Nat Webber, Sergeant Kennedy.
Warnings: None, unless anyone is remotely worried about spoilers for my fic UNIT: Strange Weapons. Oh, and I'm not that great at writing Jack, either.

Summary:
April 1986: There’s a Torchwood agent loose in Colonel Crichton’s UNIT HQ, trying to steal an alien artefact, and nobody knows what he’s really after, but he might settle for chatting up the Sergeant in the meantime...

That was quick! I'll have to get my half of the bargain done sooner rather than later then... :)

Oh, I was going to leave more comments on the Teaspoon, but it hasn't been validated there yet. I was just going to say that I thought this was great - I think you write Jack just fine, and he had lots of funny lines here. I loved his interactions with all of the OCs - poor Sgt Kennedy! Poor Pvt Robinson!! - and Nat's jealousy and his little heart-to-heart with Tilly was very nice indeed. So yes, good work! And Miss Lonsdale...of course she wasn't impressed with him! :D

Inevitably... LOL, poor Robinson probably needs whatever UNIT has in the way of trauma counselling...

Oh no, don't believe me - I think I've just made that up! And I think you're right - it is Pte I think... I guess things could have changed (I know they rejigged the rank system a bit in the early 20s, and sergeant used to officially be spelled "serjeant" in the British army up until 19xx) but probably not in that instance.

It does raise an interesting point, actually, about what happened to UNIT members who were permanently...affected...by their experiences. I think in Gary Russell's MAs or PDAs, there's some sort of horrific Torchwoodesque mental asylum-cum-prison on the moors somewhere, but that just strikes me as 90s-novel dark 'n' gritty for the sake of dark 'n' gritty - I genuinely don't believe UNIT was like that, at least not until RTD and Chibnall got their grubby mitts on it :(. Maybe some nice sort of clinic overlooking Lake Geneva or something, maybe.

And yes, you can remind me of this the next time I go putting needless armaments pr0n in my fic... :D

Yes, there are some decent TW stories along the way. I think the "not written by Chibnall" bit is quite an important consideration actually... :)

Yes, never underestimate the recovery powers of the British soldier when he's had some tea down him and a stern-but-fatherly word from the Brig! :D But yes, I'm sure they did look after their own, even if it was probably sometimes a bit difficult explaining it to families etc, because while UNIT seems to be known to the public, I assume the fact that their real job is fighting aliens is kept secret.

I've always thought UNIT should have had a padre, some sort of nice-but-useless-vicar type...(Did I ever mention my little fanon about the UNIT chapel - it's in the village church of whatever the nearest village is to wherever UNIT HQ actually is. It's a bit strange, because its memorial just consists of a list of names without any wars, battles etc specified, or even the name "UNIT", but the current commanding officer of UNIT UK lays a wreath every Remembrance Day. There's plenty of blank space at the bottom of the stone, and occasionally the list is added to. The Brig always comes along even in his old age, assuming he's not off in Peru or somewhere).

Torchwood, on the other hand, probably used to send their psychological casualties to some grim sanitarium on Dartmoor. And do experiments on them. :(

Did Chibnall write the one with the blowfish stealing the sports car and Captain John's first appearance, and him and Jack having that big stupid bar-fight? Because I liked that one! ;D I really liked CoE too - as I've said, it's like the sort of dark-and-difficult-moral-dilemma story that Chibnall aimed for in some of his previous TW eps, but the 5 hour format sort of allows it to breathe - they get to try a couple of not-as-bad options and see them fail before they go straight for the evil-but-necessary approach, so it doesn't seem as forced. I'd say it was a bit like Spooks, but you've seen more Spooks than me and might disagree, so instead I'll say its like some lost Season 7 Three story made with modern budgets and televisual techniques (and now when you do see it you'll probably think it's rubbish and that description's off the mark too! ;D) "UNITwood", on the other hand, is definitely brilliant!

That's the fella! ;D Although I think you're probably right about army padres. I once knew a Catholic priest who ended up becoming a chaplain, and he was pretty much the sort of person you could imagine joining the army anyway if he hadn't been, well, a priest.

Think too hard about things?? Me??? Never!

Yep, Chibnall wrote "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang", which is the proper name of the TW ep in question. And he also wrote the lighthouse one, which probably cancels out all of the good he ever did on the programme! Now, I wonder who wrote that one about Gwen's wedding with Nerys Hughes as her mum? Because I really liked that one too...

And there are some TW fic bunnies swimming about, but I'm resisting them. I really want to write that Seven/Romana thing for akashasheiress next, because we've been talking about it for ages, and I think it might be quite cool if you can get past the "/"-ness of it (don't worry, I only do explicit when Kamelion's involved...)

It could very well be Spooks-ish on purpose; it's noteworthy that as nasty as the alien threat is the real villains turn out to be the grey men and women of HM Government...

And I hope your writing was fruitful!

I think pre-CoE TW was probably at its best when it was being a bit lighter (although, naturally, it hardly ever was, at least as far as I can remember). And I don't mean unintentional comedy like the clan of Welsh cannibals or the space whale in the warehouse... ;D

It does, it does...first part is up, actually; more Seven n' Ace than anything else at the moment (and you have become kind of my fanfictional gauge of whether I'm doing Seven and Ace right, just so you know ;D)

Villain, eh? Anyone we know?? And UNIT: End Game...that doesn't sound hopeful, does it? XD

It may have seemed that way...I'm pretty sure Barrowman thought he was getting a Bafta for that heartwrenching performance, though! ;D

Oh no, better eat! Yes! And well, read it if you feel like it or get a chance, but I doubt it'll top him and Miss Potter romance-wise anyway! ;D

A thought, in light of your continued veiled and not-so-veiled threats against the 80s UNIT team - is that little thing you wrote about Nat and Tilly meeting Ancelyn and Bambera at some much, much later conference or something actually "canon" or not??

Date: 8 Jul 2010 09:18 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] jjpor.livejournal.com
I can't really remember...it's ages since I saw it too...I seem to remember some comical stuff with Rhys and Ianto and Owen acting like action heroes, but the thing I really remember about it is the quality Jack!angst, communing with the poor space whale - "what have they done to you my friend?!" - 'twas LOLtastic, I seem to recall, but not intentionally so.

Fair enough. ;)

LOL - I'm going on about "canon" - I'm turning into one of Those Fans...it's surely only a matter of time before I go accusing you of "ruining Nat and Tilly FOREVER!" and whatever other OTT accusations Those Fans throw at the people who only try to make up nice stories for them... ;D I meant your personal canon, of course; although I think there is a bit of a window there in actual Who continuity... XD

When you kill Kennedy off, I'll just say the last story isn't canonical and write lots of "fix it" fic where he didn't die but instead eloped with Tilly and it was all fluffy and lovely and nice etc etc. You know, like some TW "fans" did with CoE! ;D

Yeah, as long as you don't get weird and proprietorial about it like I have about the 1910s TW crew (I mean, most of _those_ are not, technically speaking, even OCs...). ("No, Gary Russell, you may be the NuWho continuity maestro, but you're dead wrong about Gerald and Harriet! WRONG, I say! etc etc) XD

Er...

Yeah...

So...

Love this! Jack being Jack is always good. More please! Loved Jack interacting and flirting with U.N.I.T. and disarming the bomb, and following his own agenda while saving part of the country.

Assuming that IS the Xmas Special storyline and wasn't just a throw away... (It's alleged Moffat's lost the only copy of the script - something I find rather hard to credit!)
