Fic: Knave of Hearts

I was planning to write more of my final UNIT 1980s story (so I can get on and write other things), but spent Sunday writing a 1980s UNIT fic sparked off by
belantana and then yesterday writing the following fic, when
jjpor threw yet another plot bunny at me, and this one bit. He suggested Jack should meet my UNIT OCs. And also that this was of course the sort of thing that would make the universe implode and could never happen... Obviously, I had to write it.
Story: Knave of Hearts
Author:
lost_spook
Rating: All Ages / PG
Word Count: 4400
Characters/Pairings: Captain Jack Harkness, Colonel Crichton, & my OCs; Tilly Holmes, Nat Webber, Sergeant Kennedy.
Warnings: None, unless anyone is remotely worried about spoilers for my fic UNIT: Strange Weapons. Oh, and I'm not that great at writing Jack, either.
Summary:
April 1986: There’s a Torchwood agent loose in Colonel Crichton’s UNIT HQ, trying to steal an alien artefact, and nobody knows what he’s really after, but he might settle for chatting up the Sergeant in the meantime...

Date: 30 Jun 2010 06:21 pm (UTC)(BTW, you always abbreviate Private as Pvt, and I've always seen it elsewhere as Pte, but my references, I realised are quite official, but all from WWI - has it changed? Because usually you are right with these things, and I realise that the world has moved on a bit since 1918. Not that it matters, but I have an enquiring mind. :-D)

Date: 1 Jul 2010 06:36 pm (UTC)Oh no, don't believe me - I think I've just made that up! And I think you're right - it is Pte I think... I guess things could have changed (I know they rejigged the rank system a bit in the early 20s, and sergeant used to officially be spelled "serjeant" in the British army up until 19xx) but probably not in that instance.

Date: 2 Jul 2010 04:46 pm (UTC)Hah, I shall now be smug, for this is likely to be the only occasion when I ever correct you correctly on a military matter ever. :-p
Oh, and, btw, I had to go and watch Captain Jack clips on YouTube as research for this (once it grew out of being just Sgt Kennedy catches an alarming thief in the lab, as it inevitably did) and it reminded me that I did actually like Torchwood. Some of it. When it wasn't written by Chris Chibnall.

Date: 2 Jul 2010 10:10 pm (UTC)And yes, you can remind me of this the next time I go putting needless armaments pr0n in my fic... :D
Yes, there are some decent TW stories along the way. I think the "not written by Chibnall" bit is quite an important consideration actually... :)

Date: 3 Jul 2010 07:07 am (UTC)Oh, yes. And I did quite like even a couple of Chris Chibnall's episodes. And, given that I had had enough before it got to CoE (which I will catch one day!), the end of S2 is how TW ended for me, and that was so sad... :-( Even if Owen was already dead, anyway. (Hmm. Am feeling the need to go read that wonderful UNITwood fic again... :-D)

Date: 3 Jul 2010 11:21 am (UTC)I've always thought UNIT should have had a padre, some sort of nice-but-useless-vicar type...(Did I ever mention my little fanon about the UNIT chapel - it's in the village church of whatever the nearest village is to wherever UNIT HQ actually is. It's a bit strange, because its memorial just consists of a list of names without any wars, battles etc specified, or even the name "UNIT", but the current commanding officer of UNIT UK lays a wreath every Remembrance Day. There's plenty of blank space at the bottom of the stone, and occasionally the list is added to. The Brig always comes along even in his old age, assuming he's not off in Peru or somewhere).
Torchwood, on the other hand, probably used to send their psychological casualties to some grim sanitarium on Dartmoor. And do experiments on them. :(
Did Chibnall write the one with the blowfish stealing the sports car and Captain John's first appearance, and him and Jack having that big stupid bar-fight? Because I liked that one! ;D I really liked CoE too - as I've said, it's like the sort of dark-and-difficult-moral-dilemma story that Chibnall aimed for in some of his previous TW eps, but the 5 hour format sort of allows it to breathe - they get to try a couple of not-as-bad options and see them fail before they go straight for the evil-but-necessary approach, so it doesn't seem as forced. I'd say it was a bit like Spooks, but you've seen more Spooks than me and might disagree, so instead I'll say its like some lost Season 7 Three story made with modern budgets and televisual techniques (and now when you do see it you'll probably think it's rubbish and that description's off the mark too! ;D) "UNITwood", on the other hand, is definitely brilliant!

Date: 3 Jul 2010 12:10 pm (UTC)TW probably do, and all. It sounds like fic ideas sprouting all over the place... Eek. (Actually, no need to even think about it; they're probably in the lighthouse.) And I was thinking of that when I said I did like some Chibnall episodes - I think he did, but I'd have to go check, and am much too lazy right now.
When I finally get round to seeing CoE, whenever that will be, I'll let you know. :-) And, I dunno, could be Spooks-ish on purpose - RTD has been on record saying that he tried to use Spooks as a bit of a model for DW, in the way it relaunches each season almost as new... It is another thing that goes in his favour, from my pov.
Must do some writing! (GOt distracted by icons again. They are much easier to do when you're lacking much of a brain than writing.)

Date: 4 Jul 2010 06:56 pm (UTC)Think too hard about things?? Me??? Never!
Yep, Chibnall wrote "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang", which is the proper name of the TW ep in question. And he also wrote the lighthouse one, which probably cancels out all of the good he ever did on the programme! Now, I wonder who wrote that one about Gwen's wedding with Nerys Hughes as her mum? Because I really liked that one too...
And there are some TW fic bunnies swimming about, but I'm resisting them. I really want to write that Seven/Romana thing for akashasheiress next, because we've been talking about it for ages, and I think it might be quite cool if you can get past the "/"-ness of it (don't worry, I only do explicit when Kamelion's involved...)
It could very well be Spooks-ish on purpose; it's noteworthy that as nasty as the alien threat is the real villains turn out to be the grey men and women of HM Government...
And I hope your writing was fruitful!

Date: 4 Jul 2010 07:24 pm (UTC)I've no idea who wrote the wedding one. From my memory, it doesn't feel like a Chibnall ep, but I could be wrong. yes, that was a fun one. And Nerys Hughes is generally a bonus. (I've just been listening to Phobos with Eight and Lucie, and she's in that, too. She's doing quite well on notching up DW credits, it seems.)
Well, I approve of Seven romance fic in general. I'm never going to be demanding that sort of fic off you, but you needn't be apologetic for writing what you wnat to write - it is fanfic, after all, and if you write explicit Five/Kamelion fic, I shall just squeak a bit and come back when you've written Seven and Ace again, or something. Besides, you *have* been talking about it for ages, so clearly it needs to get done. ;-)
Yesterday? Hmm, it actually was, a bit. I was going to do a bit more now, but I don't think I'll get much done. But I got my villain arriving in UNIT: End Game, so that was fun.

Date: 6 Jul 2010 05:49 pm (UTC)It does, it does...first part is up, actually; more Seven n' Ace than anything else at the moment (and you have become kind of my fanfictional gauge of whether I'm doing Seven and Ace right, just so you know ;D)
Villain, eh? Anyone we know?? And UNIT: End Game...that doesn't sound hopeful, does it? XD
no subject
Date: 6 Jul 2010 06:04 pm (UTC)Oh, good. Well done! :-) I'm not entirely sure I want to read it, please bear in mind. I'm sure it's wonderful and all, what with you writing it, but I'm trepidatious. I am still sold on Seven/Beatrix Potter... Besides, I've never seen you do a bad Seven and Ace, so I can't imagine you've got the least thing to worry about there. But maybe when the madness of this week is passed, I'll give it a look... and if I don't stop writing now I won't have time to eat anything before I go out. But you cheered me up muchly.
(Villain? I just named it End Game in the hope that it would stop me...)
no subject
Date: 6 Jul 2010 06:26 pm (UTC)Oh no, better eat! Yes! And well, read it if you feel like it or get a chance, but I doubt it'll top him and Miss Potter romance-wise anyway! ;D
A thought, in light of your continued veiled and not-so-veiled threats against the 80s UNIT team - is that little thing you wrote about Nat and Tilly meeting Ancelyn and Bambera at some much, much later conference or something actually "canon" or not??
no subject
Date: 6 Jul 2010 08:39 pm (UTC)I will, but if it's not for a while, it's just stuffs, and Seven/non-Potter romance wariness. ;-)
Heh. Well, it isn't officially in the fic, so I don't need to take any notice of it, unless I want. :-) And are you really asking me whether any of this is 'canon' or not? I mean, personally, I like to think of it this way, but canon?
no subject
Date: 8 Jul 2010 09:18 pm (UTC)Fair enough. ;)
LOL - I'm going on about "canon" - I'm turning into one of Those Fans...it's surely only a matter of time before I go accusing you of "ruining Nat and Tilly FOREVER!" and whatever other OTT accusations Those Fans throw at the people who only try to make up nice stories for them... ;D I meant your personal canon, of course; although I think there is a bit of a window there in actual Who continuity... XD

Date: 11 Jul 2010 07:54 pm (UTC)I did know what you meant, but I was v entertained... :-)
If you want to do that, I will be even more amused. Go ahead. Just no hate mail, thanks, because you are about the only reader left... Heh.
Well, yep. No one has covered 1980s UNIT yet. I should pitch it to BF as one of their spin-offs. *files another wild fantasy plot away neatly*

Date: 12 Jul 2010 07:24 pm (UTC)Yeah, as long as you don't get weird and proprietorial about it like I have about the 1910s TW crew (I mean, most of _those_ are not, technically speaking, even OCs...). ("No, Gary Russell, you may be the NuWho continuity maestro, but you're dead wrong about Gerald and Harriet! WRONG, I say! etc etc) XD
no subject
Date: 12 Jul 2010 07:59 pm (UTC)Yeah, you've got yourself a thing three, because you've done so much with them so well, and they're not yours. At least the only person I had like that was Colonel Crichton and nobody's got anything to say about him.
'When' I kill Kennedy off? Who says I'm a) only killing off one person, and b) who says it would be Kennedy? (Oh. Wait. I did.)
And, you just try writing that ending and keeping Tilly even remotely in character. :-p (Besides, I thought you were reconciled to Tilly/Nat and Kennedy/Kate by now.) Mind, being in character is not a requisite of bad fixit fanfic, I realise. Even so, either you have to kill Nat off instead and have Tilly not care enough to run off with the Sergeant right after, or throw her 19th C morals to the wind, considering she has gone and married Dr Webber now.
(And of course Gary Russell is wrong about Harold and Geraldine, or whatever their names are... He knows NOTHING. It's not as if he's written epic fanfic, is it?)

Date: 30 Jun 2010 06:25 pm (UTC)And it was a very long day, and I have a dyslexic thing for throw/threw/through and have to change it every single time I type it at the moment, for some reason. I missed one. Stop oppressing me, this once! (But I've edited the entry now, thanks.) :-D
I suppose at least in wasn't in the actual text, which is something...
