Happy birthday... (plus a note)

... to the wonderful liadtbunny! I do hope you're having an excellent day, with all the gloomy old 70s telly you could possibly wish for. ♥
Also, in another note, there's a blog out there where the user has been reposting LJ posts without permission. (They seem to have set it up in some automated way to repost any posts tagged with "fanfic" or variations, or entries from selected blogs, possibly, but it includes anything tagged with that - random meme posts, challenge announcement and in one case, someone complaining about the blog stealing their posts, so they obviously don't bother looking at their own content.)
It's here
I've requested that my posts be removed. (They seemed to have taken all my entries tagged fanfic since July, regardless of fandom.)
I noticed (when going through the "fanfic" tag) entries stolen from
john_amend_all, liadtbunny (happy birthday! your fic has been stolen!), kaffyr, and also
still_lycoris, who isn't on my flist, but I know some of you know.
I'm actually a lot less bothered than I probably should be about people stealing my fic, but I do very much object to someone reposting my LJ entries wholesale, and I may need to make a lot more things flocked for a while, because if it's possible to set up something like that for one tag, who knows who else is doing it for whatever kind of topic? Clearly a public entry really needs to be something I don't mind being more public than I'd planned on.
(I'm posting this publicly and tagging it "fanfic" though, because if the blog ends up with a whole lot of posts warning the world against itself, it serves the blogger right. You know, can we go back in time and prevent the invention of Tumblr or something? Not everything is made to be reblogged and context is a thing that exists, even on the internet.)

Date: 13 Oct 2014 03:08 pm (UTC)Yes, Happy birthday I've been robbed! I can't believe the arrogance of the owner's reply to skyfish and I put in my profile to ASK before archiving &*!£^&*&%^$ (and I would have most probably said yes if they did). I think I'll have to f-lock more posts than I normally would if the site is indiscriminately hoovering up posts :/ I'll try and see if I can complain to wordpress directly as the site claims wp is hosting it.
EDIT #1: It's not a wordpress site, but possibly uses its software, so I don't know who else to complain to:/
#2 I have cake:)

It's scraping stuff from LJ somehow & I do object to that. And, actually, you might be able to complain to Wordpress, because they've stolen that from them, but the link doesn't work, so they're trying to mislead users into thinking they're on a WP blog when they're not & since it has ads, it may even be a spam/malware thing at bottom. Stolen blog script, stolen entries... Might be worth a shot.
Cake!
I forgot! Here is a virtual cake I made for you. Except in the meantime, it accidentally got eaten by someone. Here it is:
I can only hope that it went to a good home and wound up in somebody's fic.

Date: 13 Oct 2014 04:21 pm (UTC)I think I get what they're trying to do--it can be really hard to find fic that's posted on LJ, and it looks like they're essentially trying to build an aggregation feed--but it's still really frustrating to have your public posts subject to reprinting in their entirety.
(This post did make it up there, btw, so there is now criticism of the site on the site itself!)

Date: 13 Oct 2014 06:46 pm (UTC)It's definitely a weird thing. Why indiscriminately scrape everything marked "fanfic" from a bunch of LJ sites? Are they making money from advertising?
No matter what, people shouldn't be re-posting fic (or anything, really) from around the internet without permission. Sorry you've been targeted.

I've got adblock on, but, yes, I think so. I rather suspect, seeing as it's not even a genuine Word Press site, that it might just be spam - scrape in content from LJ, steal your blog script from Word Press and get in views for your ads, I suppose. We just need to find a way of depriving it of this particular content.

Date: 13 Oct 2014 07:49 pm (UTC)The idea of an aggregated fanfic journal isn't a bad one, but it really ought to be done with straightforward links to fic. This way just seems creepy, as it's clearly grabbing non-fic as well. I appreciate that this is the easy, non-ridiculously-time-consuming method. But still.

I love, love, LOVE the fact that you used the site's own mechanics to get it to post your rant against it. *Bows down to you.*

Date: 14 Oct 2014 02:53 am (UTC)I have an adblock, but other people are saying there are ads on the site and it's pretending to be wordpress? I'll bet you anything that this person is doing this for ad revenue from people searching for fanfic. It's probably not a lot of revenue, but if you set up a few dozen blogs with the auto-import, then they practically run themselves and kick back a few bucks a week in profit.
Which is skeevy as hell. I hope their feed is inundated with complaints.

Date: 14 Oct 2014 12:08 pm (UTC)Yes. At first I thought it was someone being misguided, but, yes, I think it's just spam, in which case complaining & giving your email address is something I'd rather I hadn't done now, but never mind. I'll just have to make sure I choke off their content at the source in future, either by having a code tag for fanfic or flocking everything that isn't a bare fic announcement or something that needs to be open, like a YUletide letter.

On the right side bar there's a link to complain if you don't want them stealing and reposting your stuff.
Best wishes.

Date: 14 Oct 2014 08:35 pm (UTC)Not nice.
And yet, I sometimes see my icons being used without crediting across LJ and DW and I have to admit, it doesn't worry me at all. There's a difference in my head...

Date: 14 Oct 2014 08:42 pm (UTC)To a certain extent, I don't even mind someone stealing my fic - after all, I write it and post it out there in various places. But to scrape my personal blog entries for what I think now must be a spam site - I'm not happy about that at all!

Date: 16 Oct 2014 05:03 pm (UTC)WordPress won't care because their software looks like a lot of other software. Plus it was at least created with WP (version 3.7) - when you view the source there are a whole load of wp specific locations going on in there. If they've since moved it it would explain why I can't find any of the pages in the root directory that are in mine.
The person who created the theme might well not care either because there is a credit to them on there, although it's bizarrely, not a link, even though it should be (I found other blogs using the same them at http://www.wpbyexample.com/wordpress-theme/TheSearchEngineGuysLLC/Locket).
Edit: Also, WordPress is free (I wouldn't use it otherwise!), so not sure it can be stolen in quite the way you mean.
