For
hc_bingo's March Amnesty Challenge, 15 fic recs for the square "hallucinations".
Hallucinations
All these works deal with hallucinations (& hurt/comfort) of some kind as per the prompt, whether via dreams, magic, drug use, or some sort of altered mental state etc., so please note any authors' tags, notes and warnings on the original works.
Angel
1. Thanksgiving at Angel Investigations (G, Angel/Cordy, Connor, Fred Burkle, Charles Gunn, Wesley Wyndham-Price, Lorne.) "Freeze the moment, Dad. It'll last forever."
Excellently pointy drabble of a moment of fluff that really, really isn't.
Doctor Who
2. nobody's there by thisprentiss (Teen, 570 words. Eleventh Doctor & Rory Williams.) Rory's fingers were suddenly laced with the Doctor's, thumb stroking circles over the back of his hand. "I'm not trying to be annoying, I just care about you, alright?"
Post-Angels Take Manhattan, the Doctor is having trouble letting go. brief, but sharp and well done.
3. Don't You Know Where They Came From? by PhoenixDragon (Teen, 1060 words. Eleventh Doctor, the TARDIS.) He was almost glad there were no Companions aboard, even as he wished desperately for someone to come explain this to him. Or at least, ask the right questions so he could explain it to himself. The Old Girl (apparently) wasn’t up to answering said questions as She seemed to be…unavailable at the moment.
A nicely weird, dark and eerie moment alone aboard the TARDIS for the Doctor.
4. Eternity in an Hour by livii (All ages, 3138 words. Barbara Wright/Ian Chesterton, First Doctor, Susan Foreman.) "Time is nature's way of keeping everything from happening at once."
Gorgeously weird fic in which Barbara gets trapped in a temporal orbit, reliving moments, but they're not quite right.
Dracula
5. Papers found amongst the personal effects of Dr John Seward, 17th September 1896 by owl_coffee (Teen, 13,600 words. John Seward/Quincey Morris.) I thought I saw a bat flapping at my study window last night, beating its wings and scratching sharp little claws against the panes. I started up, spilling my ink-pot, but found when I went to investigate that there was nothing there; just the curtain fluttering in the night breeze. This morning I sit here in my study, still dwelling upon the eerie experience. I know very well that I ought not to entirely trust my senses when I have just taken a dose of nerve-tonic, but I am almost sure that it was real. Perhaps it is nothing — they are naturally occurring creatures, after all. Yet I feel that I must at last make this account; I know not what to do, other than to set it all down.
Vivid, intense and dark long piece, convincingly written as missing papers from the original novel, as things are not quite over yet and Dr Seward's state of mind and health is disintegrating.
6. The Soft Whispers of the Dead by
calliopes_pen (Teen, 100,032 words. Jonathan Harker, Mina Harker, Abraham Van Helsing, Lucy Weston, Dracula.) Dracula turned to ash with the rising of the sun. Despite this, his power and legacy loom large over those he once controlled. As temptations rise and haunt Jonathan and Mina, they struggle to keep their souls. As the shadows close in, will the soft whispers of the dead save them…or damn them forevermore?
Novel-length post-canon piece, tackling the loose ends left by the 1968 TV adaptation as Jonathan fights to reclaim himself and his sanity, while Mina has similar battle of her own.
Historical RPF/The Shadow of the Tower
7. Whose Bitter Tears by
misura (G, 906 words. John de la Pole, Henry VII). Lincoln receives an unexpected visitor in Dublin.
Great missing scene, set after the coronation of Lambert Simnel in Dublin - Lincoln has burnt all his bridges, but he's still dreaming or hallucinating Henry Tudor and it's impossible to get away.
Historical RPF/The White Queen
8. Tint tomorrow with prophetic ray by SecondStarOnTheLeft (Teen, 2738 words. Richard III/Anne Neville, Margaret Beaufort, Elizabeth Woodville, Elizabeth of York.) Be thou the rainbow in the storms of life. The evening beam that smiles the clouds away, and tints tomorrow with prophetic ray. - Lord Byron. Bosworth falls differently, and a King crowned a King remains.
Brilliant bit of AU history, via The White Queen (it's not tagged for it, but it's made clear elsewhere in the fic & notes) where Richard wins Bosworth, has to deal with his enemies, but has to deal with not only his enemies but loss and guilt that threaten to undermine him. (It's TWQ, so he's not a murderer, though - Margaret Beaufort is.)
The Hour
9. nothing but the water [bring my soul to bare] by voodoochild (Teen, 597 words. Randall Brown/Lix Storm.) Room 101 takes many different forms. All of them involve her. (Takes place in a mirror universe, consider yourselves warned.)
Dark and odd, but great - in a dystopic, 1984-type universe, Randall suffers re-education and memories of Lix.
Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell
10. Clocks in Venice by citrinesunset (G, 1326 words. Jonathan Strange(/Arabella Strange).) Cursed to live in perpetual darkness, time is both relentless and meaningless for Strange.
Lovely missing scene for Jonathan in the Darkness, in Venice.
Julius Caesar
11. Acted Over by Pauraque (M, 3142 words. Brutus/Cassius, Portia, Junia, Pindarus.) For Brutus, there is always time — time to consider, time to speak, time to make his point in twenty ponderously balanced lines. For Cassius, there is barely time to breathe.
Amazing, meta & dark piece as Cassius hallucinates the play being acted over and over across the centuries, the same but different every time. One of those stories that have stuck in my mind ever since I first read it (Yuletide 2012, as it turns out).
Legends of Tomorrow
12. everything is falling from the sky in pieces by brahe (Teen, 4300 words. Martin Stein & Jefferson Jackson, Clarissa Stein, Ronnie Raymond.) Hallucinagins are powerful things. Fascinating, really, from scientific and philosophic and psychologic points of view. The ability to take a human mind, to read it and know it, to create visions from thoughts.
And then, as a weapon, to torture a mind, unique, personalized horrors dragged from the deepest corners of a psyche and into staggering, blinding, painful light.
Martin Stein has a lot of horrors.
Missing scene from the episode where Martin is held by the Soviets, digging into his hallucinations and losses, as well as the effect on Jax via their psychic connection.
Lord of the Rings
13. deeper and more hurtful than anything that bleeds by ias (Teen, 1030 words. Eowyn/Faramir.) "It is the shield-arm that is maimed; but the chief evil comes through the sword-arm. In that there now seems no life, although it is unbroken." They said no man could kill him, and Eowyn is no man. But perhaps what they meant was that he could not die.
Unusual, dark and creepy fic - Eowyn, recovering post-canon as a horror story.
Once Upon a Time
14. Futile by Val_Creative (Teen, 479 words. Regina Mills/Emma Swan.) Regina deals with the emotional impact of waking from Drizella’s curse only to encounter an old friend in the process. There’s laugh lines around Emma’s clearwater blue eyes.
Roni recovers her memories only to hallucinate an old friend, very plausibly fitting into canon.
15. Let Her Perish Twice Over by maidenjedi (Teen, 1822 words. Belle/Rumplestiltskin, Regina Mills, Jefferson, Archie Hopper.) Belle and revenge.
Compelling, dark (and long since at least slightly AU, or possibly) - Belle fantasizes about killing Regina.
Ripper Street
16. Inspector Reid's Catalogue of Criminals (G, 6616 words. Edmund Reid, Homer Jackson, Fred Abberline.) An archive fic.
Really good character piece (originally written for
hc_bingo square "trapped between realities") focusing on Reid between S2-3, locked away in the archive so long he's started seeing things. One American in particular.
Spooks | MI5
17. how to rise up by schiarire (PG, 643 words. Tom Quinn/Ibn Khaldun.) 2x02, Nest of Angels
Sharp little fic - Tom is being haunted.
Star Wars
18. Not Placid Stars But Singularities by iceplanet (G, 6202 words. Darth Vader, Palpatine, Darth Palgueis, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luninara Unduli.) He stands before Sidious, head bowed, helmet pinching at the back of his neck where he hasn’t yet gotten the med droid to file down the sharp edges. Sharpness is another fact of life, now: the feel of metal digging into flesh defines his every motion. Given the time and the opportunity, he himself could probably have built prosthetics better than the ones he currently wears. “Your task, Lord Vader,” Sidious is saying, “is to transform this heap of antiquated softness into a palace worthy of our new Empire.”
In the weeks after Mustafar, Vader must come to terms with his new body and the remnants of his past. In the process, he has a few conversations that he does not expect.
Vader has to clear out the Temple in the wake of Revenge of the Sith and finds he's either hallucinating, or the place is full of Force ghosts. Excellent and very plausible look at his transition to Vader.
