Yes, I'm crazy, but I've wanted to do things with prompts for a while and
50ficlets looks fun and flexible. I've been trying to decide what prompt to claim, but a mix of things (mostly talking to
belantana and
paranoidangel42 made me think it might be interesting to do Press Gang Kenny fic (especially looking at the Kenny-Lynda friendship) and I'm on a rewatch of the series, now I own the lot on DVD, so that should work out. (Sorry - probably won't interest many of you!)

I've heard so many good things about Press Gang. I really ought to seek it out. I don't know if it's (legally) available over here, though!

Date: 28 Feb 2010 08:29 pm (UTC)Heh, I know - still, I'm having a rewatch, so a drabble (or more) here and there in between episodes. It's do-able, there's no time limit and if I fail, I just drop my claim to free it up for the... er... no other people who'd want to write Kenny from Press gang in Table 5.
There is
And Press Gang: I love it to pieces; I wanted to be Lynda Day when I was young (and Julia Sawalha's performance in that role is still probably the best she's ever been). But it is also a 20 year old, cheap ITV teenage show & Dexter Fletcher has a dogdy US accent (because the producer decided at the last minute it'd be fun if he was American. Heh.) I don't know how it might look to a newcomer. The central characters are great and every Spike/Lynda argument is a gem and while genuinely a teen drama, if current sitcoms were this witty and well-written, TV would be funier. Plus, the randomly surreal things are lovely. So... It's very hard to say. Most things I'd know whether to recommend to people or not, but Press Gang's a tough one. (I'll quote Kenny: "People say I'm too reasonable to have opinions... but I don't know about that.")
Maybe read Spike/Lynda fic and see what you think? (Well-written Spike/Lynda will offer a good idea of its main selling point! There's some about on Yuletide.)

Date: 1 Mar 2010 06:16 am (UTC)I generally tend to like 20-year-old, cheap shows (especially if they're on the cheesy/flawed side). I think I will indeed check out some Spike/Lynda fic -- any particular recs? Ones that require as little knowledge of the show as possible would of course be best . . . : )

Date: 1 Mar 2010 08:28 pm (UTC)I don't know about 50, but then over time & they don't have to be much more than drabbles. I'll see - I may be crazy, of course!
I went off to rec some fic for you and couldn't find any. I know I've read some great Press Gang fic. I suppose

Date: 1 Mar 2010 09:55 pm (UTC)Yeah, I think you're probably right. I keep thinking I could do a bunch of really short vignettes that loosely concatenate into one story -- basically, all snapshots on the Doctor/Sarah relationship -- and how hard could that be? And then I keep remembering it's FIFTY. It just doesn't look like that many on the table. And I keep getting story ideas . . .
Rats. I actually might go for this. Am I insane?

Go on... :-D

Date: 3 Mar 2010 01:31 am (UTC)Although if you want me to keep you company, you'll have to stop writing so quickly. ; )
(Given how productive you are, you're not insane at all. I still think I might be, though.)

Date: 3 Mar 2010 08:56 pm (UTC)And I doubt my productivity will last, but the ficlets suited me just fine this week, plus I've never really written any Press Gang, so it's easy to come up with ficlet-y scenarios while I rewatch the series. I find it best to write when inspried - saving things for later only backfires when you get attacked by other, rabid unexpected plot bunnies. Or not being able to write all...

Date: 6 Mar 2010 09:48 am (UTC)Lynda: "I'm thinking of habits I'm wanting to kick."
Spike: "So I'm a habit already?"
Lynda: You're something I'm wanting to kick.
*
Spike: "So why talk to me?"
Lynda: "I like to know I'm the smartest one in the conversation."
*
Spike: "You don't happen to be jealous of a girl I've never even met, do you?"
Lynda: "Of course I'm jealous, Spike. I wish I was the girl you've never even met."
*
Kenny: "Lynda, do you remember asking me to tell you if you were ever being insensitive or too demanding?"
Lynda: "No."
Kenny: "Well that's because you haven't, but you would have if you were less insensitive and demanding."
*
Kenny: "Graphic Department spending proposals. An HB pencil and a sunbed?"
Sam: "Well, I can explain the pencil."
*
Sarah: "Can you explain to me how I have just argued myself into doing exactly what you wanted me to do in the first place? You are a devious, unfeeling, calculating, manipulative bitch."
Lynda: "Well you were asking what made me a better choice for editor."
*
Kenny: "What are you doing in my wardrobe?"
Colin: "Well your mum said I could wait in your room."
Kenny: "I don't think she meant in my wardrobe."
Colin: "Would it have killed her to be a little more specific?"
*
Colin: "Spike, baby. I didn't know you were back from Birmingham."
Spike: "America, Colin. I went home to America."
Colin: "No kidding - I thought you were from Birmingham."
*
Lynda: "You and me Spike, we're held together by a force even stronger than true love."
Spike: "Which is?"
Lynda: "We both want the last word."
*
That's the basic idea. Sort of. It doesn't explain Colin... ;-D
