So, I also signed up for @hc_bingo's April Amnesty Challenge (to write a crossover fic using any or all of the prompts on the assigned strip) and got inspired to write this straight away, mostly because my brain's spent the past couple of months vaguely wanting to combine Star Wars and B7. I drafted it out as a fusion for a change, then backtracked and went for a straight crossover (with some obligatory Orac-related handwaving because Orac is still one of the best plot devices ever). I used the squares loss of identity, hostile climate, and culture shock (although given the looseness of interpretation allowed on @hc_bingo it might even just count for magical trouble as well, but that would be pushing it).

(Also when I wrote the fusion draft, I was amused, because while the debt Rogue One owes to B7 is pretty obvious, dialogue nods aside, it had never occurred to me that Jyn Erso basically is Dayna Mellanby in terms of backstory.) I've no idea how this is so long, though. It's not as if anything much happens, although obviously some things do get blown up. ;-p

For [community profile] hc_bingo's March Amnesty Challenge.

loss of identity
forced soulbonding
isolation

As per the comm requirements, all contain some level of hurt, comfort, or hurt/comfort. With most recs being for "isolation" rather than the other two squares. (The squares were random selections, so I only accidentally got relevant). May contain a lot of Star Wars, because it's also a relevant square for when you're having an Obi-Wan Kenobi reading splurge.

Cut for 16 recs in Blake's 7, Doctor Who, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, The Librarians, Once Upon a Time, Spooks, Star Wars )
thisbluespirit: (b7 - cally)
1. So [community profile] hc_bingo are doing their March Amnesty recs challenge again, which means I get a strip and make of rec list of at least 15 fanworks (using any one or more of the squares):

loss of identity
forced soulbonding
isolation

That's a lot easier than the set I had last year, I think. If nothing else, I must have some Spooks stuff bookmarked for loss of identity, among other things. I do enjoy doing this one and always wind up reading unexpected stuff for it!

2. I also think I've finally got my belated [community profile] yuletide assignment done. I need to edit it once more and get it betaed, and then I can post to the NYR collection. \o/

3. My [community profile] space_swap assignment seems pretty nice, too, so fingers crossed for that - especially as I am going to try to sign up for [community profile] hurtcomfortex too. (The sign-ups are close, but [community profile] hurtcomfortex is due a whole month after [community profile] space_swap, and oddly, that might actually be less stressful than just having one exchange going with such a long writing period.)

Guess what's back? It's my favourite bingo! The prompts still scare me and I'm a bit wary of half my card yet again, but I can never keep away from [community profile] hc_bingo:

hospital stay group support crisis of faith forced marriage whipping / flogging
bullet wounds mutation on the run unwanted transformation fall from grace
forced to participate in illegal / hurtful activity exhaustion WILD CARD arena bargaining for protection
dystopia abuse apocalypse vehicle crash loss of job / income
brainwashing / deprogramming touch-starved motion sickness haunted suicide attempt

(I'm laughing at the whole second line, because I've just been binge-watching S1-S3 of Lucifer, courtesy of my b'day presents and I'm pretty sure it's done all of that already.)
thisbluespirit: (henry v)
1. I had another look at the eligibility criteria for the current [community profile] hc_bingo challenge and realised that S&S is too big and now I don't know what to do, frankly. Oh, well, at least there are no penalties.

2. I've been continuing to work on making a Genderswap recs list for [community profile] genprompt_bingo (my idea I thought of turned out to also fit the next door as-yet-unfilled "Conficting Oaths/Obligations" square, so that worked out fine) and it's more or less done, though I need to check it again, but I felt the need to share with everyone here that when I was going through the tag on AO3, I came across a genderswapped Romeo & Juliet fic where they'd been renamed as Giulio... and Romana.

This classic Who fan immediately cannot picture that going anything like the original. (I didn't read it; it could only have disappointed after imagining Four and Romana doing R&J for TTR Storytime or something.)

3. You may recall that I currently wrangle The White Queen on AO3, which led to me wrangling The White Princess and having to watch almost the entire damned thing it. (I keep thinking I should say it wasn't that bad, but the thing is, it really was. I still find gifsets painful just because of the costumes. I mean, there's inaccurate but for reasons, and inaccurate but pretty (which is a reason) and then there's just... The White Princess. And it was so bad it should have been so much fun, I still want to try and pretend in my head it was. Still, at least the Henry/Elizabeth modern AUs are great.)

Anyway, the reason I mention this is because Starz have NO MERCY and have now made Philippa Gregory's next book, The Spanish Princess, and a brief gifset that crossed my path has left me boggling already because what even is that? (Yes, that is Elizabeth of York and Catherine of Aragon because GOD ONLY KNOWS. Luckily it's a close up so you needn't worry about costumes. Yet.)

The thing is, based on my previous experience, I probably will end watching at least some of this for wrangling purposes. *weeps* WHYYYY. Unless, of course, The Tudors wrangler bites the bullet for me. It could go either way...

(Hmm, I wonder if Margaret Beaufort will murder Arthur and Elizabeth of York as well? Can anyone die and not be murdered by Margaret Beaufort, that well known 15th C serial killer?*)

* I only wish I was joking.

I signed up again at [community profile] hc_bingo, as even though I failed with the other one, May is for Small Fandoms, so surely I can manage something? For May the challenge is to use one or more or all of my given prompts in one work for a small fandom:

phobias combat
deals with demons allergic reaction

I haven't had any thoughts on what to do yet, so suggestions welcome! (I've only got as far as thinking I'll maybe see if there's something that fits from my S&S list of prompts, or 500 prompts... & speaking of the 500 prompts thing, more of that later.)

Too late for the April Challenge, but I finished my Dracula (TV 1968)/Doctor Who crossover. Luckily, I had the square "loss of powers" on my regular [community profile] hc_bingo card, so used it for that, as well as for [community profile] 100fandoms and [community profile] who_allsorts.

1. Having completed the March reccing challenge, I signed up for the April challenge which is to write a crossover using at least one or more (or all) of these prompts:

cages purgatory captivity loss of powers

(I actually had to ask for a second strip because the first one was so alarming, and I got this, so I have no regrets.)

Which fandoms should I crossover? I have no immediate ideas.

2. I decided in the midst of giffing Dracula (TV 1968) and watching David Suchet in things that I should try and get hold of the 2006 ITV Dracula, which [personal profile] calliopes_pen had told me the (fairly batshit) plot of a while back. It is definitely kind of enjoyable, but it is a waste of a potentially great cast. (And, [personal profile] calliopes_pen, you were right about Marc Warren! He is actually a really good Dracula and I'm not even having a problem watching him.)

I mean, a connection between vampirism and syphilis is potentially interesting, but... not like this. I have laughed at everything evil!syphilitic!Arthur (Dan Stevens) has done so far, because it is all just that ridiculous.*

And combining Renfield and Van Helsing is also a thing... that you can see why most productions avoid. 0_o However, if anyone can salvage something from this, it will be David Suchet.

I haven't finished it yet, but ITV have definitely gone downhill on the Dracula front since 1968. Sophia Myles hasn't even had a single costume that fit her, let alone a hat. (Mina had a hat one time. She got bit.) It's quite fun to watch, though, and I am reliably informed that it actually ships Dr Seward/Mina. (Poor Jonathan did not make it out of the castle, also a bit of waste.)

Though I think possibly one of Sophia Myles's ill-fitting outfits could in fact be Suzanne Neve's white outfit from the 1968 version and I look forward to screencapping and being still unable to tell later because of the awkwardness of b&w telly. I shall be sure to let you know regardless.

I signed up for a strip of prompts for the [community profile] hc_bingo March Amnesty reccing challenge, as I often do - I usually enjoy this one.

And, lol, while not involving anything as unpleasant as their prompts often do, these are going to tricky ones to find stuff for... which is part of the fun, of course. I shall be wandering down some interesting by-ways of AO3 tags, I can see:

stalkers
loss of hearing
hallucinations

(You don't have to be part of the main bingo to sign up if you just want to do the reccing challenge.)

Still catching up!

Day 5

In your own space, promote three communities, challenges, blogs, pages, Twitters, Tumblrs or platforms and explain why you love them. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Some comms of my own:

[community profile] tardis_library - a Doctor Who reccing comm, made as a successor (but different from) the lovely [community profile] calufrax (now inactive, but with an amazing backlist that is still one of the best ways to get at gems from the Teaspoon Archive) - recs from all corners of the Whoniverse, posted anywhere, and in any media format. I'm so pleased with how this has taken off - more people & more recs are always welcome!

[community profile] historium which I have just set up as a central hub for all history fandoms, whether RPF or fictional to meet, post stuff, or use as a launching pad to set up more specific comms. It's had a great beginning & I need to get back to it once I am a little more recovered.

[community profile] tic_tac_woe or Apocabingo - a panfandom mini bingo challenge (using a tic tac toe 3x3 card) with all apocalyptic prompts! No deadlines, just sign up for a card & then end worlds/countries etc. or save them as you wish. (Fictionally, obviously.)

[community profile] who_allsorts - as an extra, because I meant to only include three, but I've a soft spot for this one. It's another Doctor Who community - an old-school prompt table with claiming, but with bite-sized tables. You can sign up for up to two at once and claims are very flexible (anyone can make the same claim, pairings/characters/eras/themes are all accepted, so you can choose how wide or narrow to make it). I created it with the object of enabling more DW content of all kinds, and I still think the prompt tables are very pretty!

Not-by-me communities:

[community profile] hc_bingo - still my favourite bingo, despite frequently being terrified by the prompts! It's very flexible about interpretation of prompts, and fills can be comfort, or hurt, or hurt/comfort as you please, and any fanworks are eligible. It runs once a year, but there are fun amnesty challenges and you only need to create one fanwork a year to stay eligible for the next round. It's been the perfect excuse to write a lot of things, and I've really enjoyed the Amnesty challenges when I've taken part. (Which are open to anyone if that works for you better than a bingo.)

[community profile] fic_rush - we need to sort ourselves out for another round soon, but this 48 hour actual ficathon (i.e. writing marathon) has been a wonderful supportive & social ingredient of my journalling life ever since I first plucked up the courage to join. There are ninja penguins, alien fish, glowsticks, and writerly pasta and attempts at galactic domination, but you don't have to worry about that. I mean, until and unless the penguins get you...

I enjoy recs and reccing comms, the main two of which I follow here are [community profile] fancake (though I never can get myself together to post for a theme) and [community profile] gensplosion for gen recs (which I have recced for, but am bad at doing), both of which have led me to some excellent fic, and both of which are panfandom.

There are so many comms I like! Here are, quickly, some more:

[community profile] who_at_50 (general DW comm, despite the name)

Bingos - [community profile] ladiesbingo, [community profile] trope_bingo, [community profile] allbingo and [community profile] genprompt_bingo. (Of these I particularly like [community profile] genprompt_bingo (which takes any kind of fills, despite the name, it's just that the prompts are gen prompts) but they're all good in their different ways.)

Icons - [community profile] iconthat, [community profile] icontalking, [community profile] icon_library, [community profile] icons10in20, [community profile] icons & [community profile] fandom_icons. (A mix of challenge and general posting comms.)

Which is probably enough from me, but I still like comms. And that's even before we get to all the exchanges or my other comms I run or co-mod...
thisbluespirit: (Dracula)
I finally managed to edit my stupidly long pointless hypothermia/Monopoly fic. (Standalone AU of an an old Runaway Tales canon I still comfort-write when life gets bad and bingo squares enable.) For [community profile] hc_bingo square "hypothermia" and [community profile] genprompt_bingo square "hurt/comfort."

It's marginally seasonal, anyway. (For anyone who was wondering, in the end I claimed poetic license on the trains and didn't rewrite it to be in 1947 instead. So, it's a pointless, overlong, self-indulgent work with magical Dr Beeching proof trains. I've got to stop doing this sort of thing, but I probably won't quite yet, alas.)

And I spent some more birthday money and have some new old telly to watch. (It might even have some Mr. Maxwell in it somewhere. *looks innocent*)

Random good things:

1. OUaT vid for the most adorable thing that came out of S7 - that is, Alice/Robin (or Tilly/Margot, as you prefer), done as a fake movie trailer that should totally be a thing:

2. Mr Bennet Travels Through Time by A Marguerite. Fic in which Mr Bennet is in fact a time traveller who can't get home again. Crack that winds up making so much sense - this is fab. I stumbled over it somewhere and am v glad I did.

I have (in news that will surprise no one) now completed my fic for the two generals from episode 10 of Enemy at the Door because apparently I have forgotten my New Year's Resolution to be less obscure and weird in my fic already. It does, however, fill a square for both [community profile] hc_bingo and [community profile] genprompt_bingo, so there is that.

(The M rating is for the suicide, not the shippage, btw. Alas. I don't know why I insist on writing EatD fic that's actually more depressing than the series itself, but there you go.)

Enemy at the Door walks a fine line in dealing with these things, and usually pretty well. Hopefully, I've managed to follow suit, but if not, that's my fault and not that of the series.

(I would like it to be said, though, that I still wish someone else would write this backstory, and write it better. Probably with more stiff-necked repressed pining and things. I'll share my notes, promise! However, that is probably too much to ask for, so the world will have to put up with my efforts. At least, the one or two people in the world who would be interested, that is, of course... ;-p)

1. [community profile] hetswap assignments finally went out last night. I have one that hopefully should be possible and fun to do (the one I guessed I'd get - it's proved to be a very small exchange this round), although my other strong suspicion that I was unmatchable myself was also true and I was in the first batch of pinch hits. However, it's okay, I've been claimed some time this afternoon, so I needn't worry that my requests for weird DW pairings involving splintered alien art thieves put anyone off. At least, not yet.

2. Talking about When the Boat Comes In reminded me that I'd scribbled out a ficlet for a [community profile] genprompt_bingo square when I started S4, but saved it to type up once I knew whether it got jossed or not. I've been trying to finish off a few [livejournal.com profile] runaway_tales things, including another AU. This one was also written for [community profile] genprompt_bingo square "Happy Endings" and [community profile] hc_bingo square "grief" and is a modern coffee shop AU. I am so proud of myself, even if maybe the coffee shop is probably too incidental. But a while ago, [livejournal.com profile] oonaseckar said to me that it would probably be impossible to do a modern Edward/Julia AU and, of course, if someone says that it's impossible to write something, obviously I have to write it. (I wrote Six/Rose and Steed/Baldrick once for the same reason. Edward and Julia managing excuses to have a fake relationship and then be awkward about it in the 21st C was no problem at all.)

But I crossposted it to AO3, as I think it's a fun/sweet enough standalone piece; also it's for two other comms, and also because LJ's word limit forced me into posting it in two parts over at RaTs, which annoyed me, because clearly it isn't a work that's meant to be in two parts. I hoped I'd done enough amputation, but apparently not. (Dammit, LJ.)
